For fans like DB and SBBruin28, you are all correct when you say CCK wasn't hired to go 3-9 or 2-10 this year. Unfortunately, this year turned into a much bigger rebuilding project than initially anticipated due to injuries and players leaving the program (who either weren't buying into CCK's vision or were informed their roles would be different than originally expected).
What UCLA hired CCK for was to provide a detailed map for program success. When you think of the different offensive systems UCLA tried while Neuheisel and Mora were the HCs, you can see the need for a clear direction. The ability of CCK and his staff to sell this vision to recruits and coach them up will ultimately determine his future.
I'm not sure if you read the Dylan Hernandez column in the LA Times on Monday where he talked about the need for SC to break away from the Carroll connection for their next HC. I bring it up because in the column, an NFL personnel executive says SC is still trying to figure out who they are a few years into the Helton era. The same executive said UCLA, on the other hand, is heading in the right direction. He noted Kelly has identified the type of players he wants and expects 3 to 6 of these recruits to begin appearing in the early rounds of the NFL draft in 3 to 4 years. This doesn't guarantee success but it does show others in the business of football see what many of us are missing as fans of the program. |
