Chip's recruiting will work out spectacularly
Posted Sat, Jul 27 7:03 pm
Many here have already proclaimed Chip's recruiting to be a failure! His recruits don't carry four+ star ratings and players that "should" come here elect to go elsewhere.

Let's look at his record.

This coach at one time had two Heisman Trophy winners committed to his program at the same time. Both were 3*s. Johnny Manziel switched to TAM while Marcus Mariota remained.

This is the same coach who reached the pinnacle of CFB using offensive skill players like

LaMichael James (3*, offers from Arkansas, Minnesota, Mississippi St., Missouri, Nebraska, TCU, Tulsa)
Kenjon Barner (3*, offers from ASU, Utep)
Josh Huff (4*, Baylor, Buffalo, Colorado)
Darron Thomas (4*, Florida, LSU, Miami, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, Ok St.)
Jeff Maehl (3*, Cal, OrSt, Washington, Wassu)

and defensive skill players like

Casey Mathews (3*, ASU, Cal, Colorado, Georgia Tech, Ole Miss, SDSU, Utah)
John Boyett (3*, Stanford, Utah, Boise)
Spencer Paysinger (2*, Boise, Colorado, Wyoming)
Talmadge Jackson (3* Cal, Fresno, Ucla)
Eddie Pleasant (3*, ASU, Cal, OrSt, Washington)

The starting offensive line:
Bo Thran 3*
Carson York 3*
Jordan Holmes 2*
C. E. Kaiser 2*
Mark Asper 2*

The starting DL:
Terrell Turner, 3*
Brandon Bair, 2*
Zac Clark, 3*
Kenny Rowe, 4*

Throw shade on our coach at your peril. Great days ahead for Bruin football!

It always blows me away when people do this kind of research. I just sit back and think the exact same thing. Well done.

Don’t call recruits busts until you see what they can do... teach them a system, plug and play. People will be surprised. Watch Chip work. Winning will bring more stars.

but cause for concern. There is absolutely a difference.

I would also have to know more about how THOSE recruitment's transpired. Nike er Oregon was using a recruiting service which ultimately led to sanctions. Was Chip pulling kids from College of the Mines ?

And if Kelly is landing kids much further down his want list due to academic concerns then again there is some cause for concern that UCLA will have the talent level to compete at the level he was hired.

Not a "sky is falling" declaration just that it is certainly interesting and worthy of casual observation/concern.

However, this is apples and oranges compared to Chip’s Oregon.

Different money, different recruiting attractions, different commonality of scheme..you name it

He’s never going to recruit like he did because he was the forefront. It’s the new normal.

We will be successful just not THAT successful unless radical changes are met

And what are these changes? No idea.

What he did at Oregon has no bearing on what he.....

is doing now! Oregon is not UCLA and many of those players you listed may not have been eligible to even be offered at UCLA. Bottom line, people are not dumb and they know that consistent winning requires landing the top local and national talent across the board year after year. Look at the perennial top 15 programs and note that fact. Thus far, UCLA has not been able to land many, if any, of our top "local 5 star guys" and that is a bad sign anyway you choose to spin it. Top Players win games and if UCLA wants to win the P12 they need to land more. That's simply a fact. Chip needs to start earning his millions since he was hired to win football games and that requires winning the recruiting battles first. That is the job.

That’s 1 year. CCK knew he needed better players - look @

2014, the second of 2 championships for Oregon. That was Helfrich as HC but it was all of the players that CCK recruited. Hardly ANY 2 * players on the roster, mostly 4-star, a fair amount of 3 star, some 5 * - a sample below (I’m sure the names are very familiar):

5-stars:
Thomas Tyner
Aria Armstead

4-stars:
Royce Freeman
Byron Marshall
Devon Allen
Darren Carrington
Dwayne Stanford
Pharoah Brown
Evan Baylis
Deforest Buckner
Efo Ekpe Olomu
Dion Mathis
Arron Springs
Erick Dargan
Tyree Robinson
Jimmie Swain
Toro Dey Prevot
Reggie Daniels

Not all of them pan out, but the point is, CCK knew he needed better, more highly ranked players, and he went after & got them. Will winning attract these better players? Absolutely. Does this suggest that Bruin fans should be patient with CCK, or at least another season or two? I believe so. But let’s not delude ourselves into thinking that playing with 2* and 3* long term is a winning strategy, or that having some concerns with how recruiting has gone so far isn’t valid.

3 star means average player now

Back in those years with Chip, 3 stars were actually average pac-12 level recruits because 2 stars existed. Nowadays, there are more 3 stars than all d1 schools can sign. All of our unknown commits without a d1 offer like Harris, Keeter, Jackson, etc have 3 stars now.

BTW: LaMichael James and Carson York were 4 stars, not 3 stars. See the Oregon Media guide.
