Didn’t look good

Looks like her right knee buckled a little on that foul. The foul was a common foul and did not appear malicious at all.

Watkins is a ball hog and can be overly dramatic. But, this doesn't look good. And if the injury's serious, that's not good for the women's game writ large, because unlike with the men, the superstars in WBB tend to stay in school all 4 years. Watkins playing in the postseason is great for the game, so I hate to see this.

Having the superstars stay means that schools can develop rivalries and storylines that develop from the previous year can carry over into the next. Last season's NCAA tournament had record viewing audiences because of that.

History of Players with ACL injuries

I remember how high Ed O got before his ACL tear (was watching in Wooden Center when it happened) and he was never quite the same but he was close. Same with Baron and of all the players I remember coming back from an ACL, he was the closest to regaining his former self. He was a freak athlete (let's not forget that even though he tore his ACL in the NCAA tournament, he was back late the next season) and had he just kept himself in better shape, who knows if he'd have gotten himself back to where he once was.

I remember years ago reading how much more likely women are to tear their ACL than men partially because of their wider hips and the resulting angle/alignment along with some other factors. Juju will be an interesting player to follow. Pre-injury, she was so quick and able to get the open shot whenever she wanted and/or draw the foul. I don't know if she'll be able to do that to the same level as before and as she ages, her athleticism will further deteriorate.

She might go down as one of those "could've been one of the greatest and sure fire HOFer if not for injury"...a la Bo Jackson and Gale Sayers. I have no doubt she'll be good again...just not sure about great. Hope she is able to play well again...just not against us of course. Guess we will see.

Now $C fans are blaming the coach for Juju's injury

I didn't watch Southern Cal's 1st round win over UNC Greensboro. It was a rout -- Southern Cal won 71-25. Apparently, Watkins tweaked her ankle in the 3rd quarter.

But, with Southern Cal up by 40 points in the 4th quarter, Coach Gottlieb inexplicably put Watkins back into the game. I've already seen a lot of comments to the effect that Watkins' heavy minutes this season contributed to the injury. But, I didn't realize that she'd already injured her ankle the game before. Watkins played a lot of minutes this season. She averages 34 minutes a game, and plays a lot of garbage time minutes with Watkins and Coach Gottlieb accused of stat padding. Someone on the 247 site posted this article from Athlon Sports about the fan reaction.

By comparison, Lauren Betts averages 30 minutes a game and Kiki Rice averages 28 minutes.
