WSoccer: UCLA advances to B1G semifinal w/ 1-0 win vs PSU
Posted Tue, Nov 05 2:16 pm (Edited Tue, Nov 05 2:18 pm)
Second-seed UCLA knocked off Penn State yesterday in the B1G tournament in St. Paul. B1G Freshman Of The Year Nicki Fraser got the only goal of the match for either team, and the Bruins will now play Washington in the B1G semifinal in St. Louis on Thursday. The winner will advance to Sunday's championship match against the Southern Cal vs Rutgers winner.

The Pac-12 did not have a conference tournament, yet 3 of the 4 semifinalists come from the old Pac-12. Remains to be seen what kind of an effect this kind of grind will have when the NCAA tournament rolls around.

UCLA advanced to the Big 10 conference championship match after a 2-0 win over Washington on Thursday. They will face surprising finalist Rutgers who upset SC on penalty kicks in the other semifinal. Per the link below, the Rutgers goal keeper stopped the first three penalty kicks by SC (that's another surprise).

The tournament championship match will be televised tomorrow on the Big 10 network at 10:00 AM.

UCLA won their first Big 10 Tournament title in their initial Big 10 season with a dominating 5-0 win over Rutgers. UCLA scored early in the match (Vargas in the seventh minute) and then capped the first half with a long goal by Geis (about 45 yards) with one second left that gave them a 3-0 lead and the Bruins never looked back. This win should move UCLA into the top ten and get them a higher seeding in the NCAA Tournament. The field will be announced tomorrow. Another early first for UCLA HC Aozasa.

WSoccer: UCLA earns #2 seed in NCAA Tournament

The Bruins will get to host all the way through the 3rd Round of the NCAA tournament. Opening match will be against Cal Baptist on Friday night at 6pm PT. The other side of the opening bracket is #7 seeded Virginia Tech vs Tennessee. Unfortunately, the crowd will likely be sparse. Friday will be a ridiculously crowded sports night with the Bruin football team playing UW and the men's basketball team playing a home game against Lehigh at the same time.

The top seeded team in UCLA's bracket is Duke, which will have a home field advantage if both teams advance to the quarterfinal. #2-seed North Carolina is also on UCLA's side of the bracket for the College Cup if both teams advance. The College Cup will again be in Cary, NC. Even though UCLA won the championship there a couple of years ago, it's still a huge advantage to the east coast ACC teams.

Even though Southern Cal got knocked out in the B1G Tournament semifinal, they still got a #1 seed.

WSoccer: #2-seed UCLA advances but it wasn't easy

Fortunately, this season the Bruins did not have to face UC Irvine in the first round (who upset UCLA 2 of the last 3 years in the opening round). But, it still took a hard-fought overtime battle for UCLA to advance. UCLA held a one-goal lead for much of the match over Cal Baptist, but gave up the tying goal with only 6 minutes to go in regulation.

UCLA got the win thanks to a penalty in the 102nd minute, which Jayden Perry cashed in for the golden goal.

UCLA will stay at home and play #7-seed Virginia Tech on Friday. The winner of that match will play the winner of the match between #3-seed Iowa and #6-seed Georgetown with a trip to the NCAA quarterfinals on the line.
