OT: UCLA in the movies
Posted Sat, May 18 5:57 am
I was reading the UCLA/Back to the Future article on gojoebruin.com (link below) and started thinking about other movies that have mentioned or referenced UCLA. I know the UCLA campus has been used as the backdrop for countless shows and movies but I'm not talking about that. I wanted to see where UCLA has had cameos in "Hollywood". I remember the opening scene of My Cousin Vinny where they show a UCLA notebook in the convertible to indicate where Ralph Macchio is headed. Also, in Legally Blonde The Musical (not the movie), my wife's favorite, Elle Woods goes from UCLA to Harvard Law.
I'm sure there are many more. If you know of any, please share by putting the title in your heading. Thanks!

Kinda hard to see, but the scene of the special ops guys chillin’ before the invasion to get Bin Laden, there’s a football being tossed around that has the blue UCLA script on it.

When Elizabeth Shue didn’t return for the sequel, didn’t the writers transition this through Macchio’s response to Mr. Miyagi as something like, “She ran off with a UCLA football player”?

I've long felt that the movie One on One was written as a dig at Wooden. The basketball coach had a rolled up program in his hand during games. The donor that Steele sold tickets to was "Mr. Bruins."

The guy that wrote the screenplay had been a UCLA hoops scrub, iirc.

there were several mentions of Buck Compton and his love of UCLA. I found this on the internet.

“The Easy Company men began throwing grenades at the retreating enemy. Compton had been an All-American catcher on the UCLA baseball team. The distance to the fleeing enemy was about the same as from home plate to second base. Compton threw his grenade on a straight line—no arch—and it hit a German in the head as it exploded."

I don’t remember the name of the movie but there’s a World War II movie where a Japanese POW surprises his American captors with his fluency in English and then tells them that he went to UCLA.

Gotcha! 1985 spy movie with Anthony Edwards

This films has an abundance of on campus shots at both the beginning and the end of the film. It features a very young Anthony Edwards as a student who does paint ball battles at school. While on summer vacation in Europe he gets caught up with a beautiful femme fatale and subsequently has a Cold War spy ring trying to kill him. He travels back home with the bad guys in pursuit. Once back on campus, he has the advantage of knowing the territory, and is able to triumph.

The climactic chase seen is comical in that it rapidly edits from widely separated points on campus, like running out from the bottom stairs of Bunche Hall and then running past the Inverted Fountain. They played this movie in the dorms and everyone had a good laugh at the editing.

The 1980 film "The Last Married Couple in America", two memorable scenes. One, Natalie on the kitchen floor wearing a "UCLA" sweat shirt. Two, Natalie and George Segal (playing her husband) going to Tommys, she has no clothes on except her fur coat. Wow! perfect date night.

Filmed at the Delta Tau Delta house. They borrowed SAE composites for the walls because the DTD house had about 6 guys at the time. Also Daphne Zuniga, who starred in the movie, attended UCLA along with Heather Locklear and Mariska Hargitay - all at the same time.
