* Head coach for the Bruins for seven years (1958 to 1964). (Took over for George Dickerson after three games in 1958.)
* Assistant coach under [[Sanders, Red|Red Sanders]] for eight years years (1950 to 1957).  Was on the staff of the [[1954]] National Championship team.
* His [[1961]] team reached the Rose Bowl.

* Barnes' last recruiting included eventual Heisman Trophy-winning quarterback Gary Beban.  That class was the backbone of Coach Tommy Prothro's early success at UCLA. The Bruins had a 24-5-2 record the three seasons after Barnes resigned. (Barnes resigned after learning the Athletic director was not going to renew his contract.)
