COACHING HIGHLIGHTS
- Head coach for the Bruins for seven years (1958 to 1964). (Took over for George Dickerson after three games in 1958.)
- Assistant coach under Red Sanders for eight years years (1950 to 1957). Was on the staff of the 1954 National Championship team.
- His 1961 team reached the Rose Bowl.
- Was also a decorated World War II veteran. [1]
- Barnes' last recruiting included eventual Heisman Trophy-winning quarterback Gary Beban. That class was the backbone of Coach Tommy Prothro's early success at UCLA. The Bruins had a 24-5-2 record the three seasons after Barnes resigned. (Barnes resigned after learning the Athletic director was not going to renew his contract.)
