CAREER HIGHLIGHTS
- Played halfback from 1937-1939.
- The 1939 team was first undefeated Bruin team.
- Led team in scoring for 1938 (60 pts) and 1939 (30 pts).
- Led team in passing and rushing for three straight season.
- Led nation in total offense in '39 (1,370 yards).
- He, Woody Strode, and Jackie Robinson played "minor league" football in the Pacific Coast Professional Football League as the NFL had developed and enforced a color barrier in 1934 and extended until 1946.
- He and Woody Strode went on to be the first African Americans to play in NFL (Los Angeles Rams in 1946-48), while Robinson broke the color-barrier in baseball.
- Nickname: Kingfish

- Charter member of UCLA Athletic Hall of Fame (1984)
- Number 13 jersey was first to be retired.
- UCLA's first All-American in 1939.
