Is UCLA not recruiting?

Many fans, including myself are wondering, why so little activity with recruiting? Isnt Chip the master of finding diamonds in the rough...cant he get that 5 star speedster to flip?

Seems like UCLA not in too many recruits' top 5's

this from Primetime...

If you’re out there doing all of the work with a trained eye to what specific attributes you’re looking for, why would you want to draw attention to the gems you’re mining.

There's an SC commit visiting this weekend. "Commitments" are worthless until NSD. And as Chip says, if a player commits somewhere while he's still talking with other schools, he's just making dinner reservations. He knows it's far from over.

One, Chip feels they're behind on building relationships with 2019 guys, so he's not killing himself on guys we probably wouldn't have landed anyway.

Two, he likes the 2020 class better, hence us having offered 50 some odd guys, with even the early signing day for 2020 being more than a year away. Compare that to us barely having 50 offers to 2019 guys with early signing day 6 months away.

Three, his evaluation process is slow, and he likes to offer guys that are late bloomers, so we're still waiting on those.

Four, we are likely only going to be taking 20 guys in this class anyway. 8 commits with 4 more months until signing day is fine.

CCK building a recruiting plan

If I'm not mistaken, I recall CCK saying his plan was to create a presence at every high school in CA as he realizes how much talent is scattered throughout the state. This approach requires the coaching staff to travel to many high schools and it is not an effort that can be done in a short period of time. He wants UCLA to establish relationships at every HS. This effort fits into OswegoBruin's summary above.
