Javin Wright is a long and quick defensive back who is projected to play either cornerback or safety at the next level.
And the senior from Hamilton HS in Chandler, Ariz. is projected to do so at a high level. He’s widely considered to be one of the best defensive backs in the Grand Canyon State.
In the summer, Wright narrowed his choices down to Arizona State, Nebraska, UCLA and Washington. Each school has a compelling reason for being on his list.
If he picks Arizona State, Wright becomes the hometown hero. Picking Nebraska would mean he follows in the footsteps of his father, Toby Wright. UCLA would mean an opportunity to make a mark on a young team in a massive media market. Washington could groom him to be a leader on one of the best defenses in the country.
Wright says he has a visit scheduled for UCLA on October 28. he also expects to schedule a visit to Washington soon.
Bruin coaches are telling Wright he could play early and often for them.
“They said I could start early and they really want me,†Wright said of UCLA. “I could play corner or safety or even linebacker. They were telling me how Coach (Chip) Kelly wants me and everything.â€
That pitch, and other aspects of the school, have Wright interested.
“UCLA is actually one of my top picks,†Wright said. “I think it’s a pretty good school. The football team, I feel, is really developing. They have a lot of young players. They’re working with a lot of weapons that are really young right now. So if they develop they could be a really big powerhouse in the nation.â€
Wright says he plans to make a commitment after the football season and sign in December. When asked if other schools outside his top four have a chance, he says yes. USC recently made contact with Wright and Wright said he’s interested. He also mentioned he would be interested in Oregon.
