A rainy afternoon calls for a story...
Three coaches recruit a five star player:
One coach says we’re gonna get you a heisman!
Another coach says we love you, you’re our number one target. It takes a special player to play for us and you are it.
Chip comes in and says here’s what we can do for you... train hard, eat right, get sleep, study hard, and you’ll be the best you can be. He’s not quite as interested in hearing kids talk as he is in making a clear pitch for what he expects on and off the field....and that if you want to maximize your talent come to him.
The truth is, and we can argue over whether it works, is that Chip doesn’t come in and coddle and kiss ### and tell players what they want to hear. He is above any one player. It’s a system. Follow him, take care of your body, and you’ll be fine, even ahead of the rest. Not a very sexy pitch.
In an age of social media celebrity, that’s not gonna play with many of the top kids UNESS you are winning on the field and it’s undeniable.
When we start winning more, the top players will come. Fair enough to argue whether he should have adjusted this year, given the record, and coddled more.... but that’s just not CCK.
In my view, you gotta love a coach who believes in himself that much. I’m betting he gets the most of of this class, and makes some of these three Stars into Jayon Browns and Nate Meadors’. It probably won’t end up with a ton of stars, but who’s to say chase griffin doesn’t become a great QB. Perhaps Njoku becomes a star he looks hard to me. The O Lineman Rhyan could be a standout. We never know, but I will always take a three star with the right system measurables and a good coach over a four or five star player with a Tom Bradley coaching him.
