chip recruits differently

A rainy afternoon calls for a story...

Three coaches recruit a five star player:

One coach says we’re gonna get you a heisman!

Another coach says we love you, you’re our number one target. It takes a special player to play for us and you are it.

Chip comes in and says here’s what we can do for you... train hard, eat right, get sleep, study hard, and you’ll be the best you can be. He’s not quite as interested in hearing kids talk as he is in making a clear pitch for what he expects on and off the field....and that if you want to maximize your talent come to him.

The truth is, and we can argue over whether it works, is that Chip doesn’t come in and coddle and kiss ### and tell players what they want to hear. He is above any one player. It’s a system. Follow him, take care of your body, and you’ll be fine, even ahead of the rest. Not a very sexy pitch.

In an age of social media celebrity, that’s not gonna play with many of the top kids UNESS you are winning on the field and it’s undeniable.

When we start winning more, the top players will come. Fair enough to argue whether he should have adjusted this year, given the record, and coddled more.... but that’s just not CCK.

In my view, you gotta love a coach who believes in himself that much. I’m betting he gets the most of of this class, and makes some of these three Stars into Jayon Browns and Nate Meadors’. It probably won’t end up with a ton of stars, but who’s to say chase griffin doesn’t become a great QB. Perhaps Njoku becomes a star he looks hard to me. The O Lineman Rhyan could be a standout. We never know, but I will always take a three star with the right system measurables and a good coach over a four or five star player with a Tom Bradley coaching him.

Chip seems to have a straight to the point personality.
I think he believes more in focusing time and effort and the fundamentals of cause and effect. He likely has looked at data to support his beliefs.
He’s a no nonsense type of guy.

It ought to be required reading for any official visitor.
It took our BG posters a while to actually get a handle on Kelly and his recruiting strategy.
As for you, Crispy my man.
You absolutely nailed it.

And that is BEFORE Spring attrition.

You can talk about his style difference all you want, the thrust of the issue is NOT the star gazing, it's the lack of bodies plain and simple. This also doesn't address the fact that a large number of targets didn't hear word one from the staff for weeks and thus were not sure where they stood for a coach who supposedly prizes being blunt, he couldn't pick up the dang phone in order to inflict this precious bluntness. The class was a failure of both effort and method, if you want to look at the sunny side up of the method, that's fine. But a class like this going to cause depth problems down the line and also points to some issues with roster management.

Believe whatever you want, but there was too much left on the table to call this last class anything but a disaster. The individual players might all be home runs and I hope they are, these are all young men who signed on to be Bruins and I'll cheer them loudly, but they should have had more classmates.

Look at the numbers....

UCLA offered 90 players and about half of their offers (43) went to 4 and 5 star players, so obviously Kelly wants those type of players. However, Kelly only signed ONE 4 star player. Kelly vets all the recruits before offering them so he still offered 43 - 4 and 5 star recruits and 42 turned him down. I'm sure Kelly was disappointed those numbers and that is the reason he made changes to his recruiting strategy for this year.

Why are posters trying to somehow report this as a positive? He had a bad year in recruiting. Accept and it move on. Hopefully things will get better.
