In a thread that is about to drop off this page I mentioned a big kid from Whittier who didn't make it past fall practice at UCLA who you correctly identified as Charlie McMurtry. I then asked you if the name Gary Campbell meant anything. He was the tailback on the same team and graduated with Charlie. I remember Red Sanders speaking at our fall sports banquet and was told that Red was interested in both of them.

Do you remember Gary Campbell? Charlie hung around Whittier, working as a salesman at Harris Oldsmobile, but AFAIK Gary just vanished.

I Remember Gary Campbell

If memory serves, even if there is no guarantee that it does, he was a big kid, highly regarded skill position player from Whittier H.S. But I don't know what became of him after high school.
The Whittier area was a rich vein for recruiting gold back then.
I recall a J.C. state 880 champ named Bob something from the Whittier area, who went on to UCLA.
Then there was this unheralded sprinter from West L.A. a few years earlier, who was shaking off some rust accumulated in the USAF. He was UCLA's top sprinter, but only in practice. When it really counted, he disappeared.
So he henceforth concentrated on academics where he had more success.
