The vetting system may be holding back UCLA recruiting
Posted Fri, Jul 26 9:35 pm
With various points of view being shared regarding Kelly's recruiting success, one area where Kelly appears to be taking the higher road compared to former HC Mora is the vetting process and I believe it's impacting results. Kelly and his staff seem to be making offers to recruits only after they meet the academic requirements plus pass a character check. Mora was more open to pursuing talented recruits who were either flawed or who were ultimately unable to get into UCLA.

The vetting process takes time and I believe it is preventing UCLA from offering recruits who are juniors or younger. Unless a young recruit is already showing academics (or character) won't be an issue, I'm guessing CCK isn't giving him an early offer. This approach could also explain why they aren't recruiting some players with the same aggression as other programs. We appear to be moving towards becoming more like Stanford than Oregon without the experience and/or ability to know how to effectively recruit this way yet.

Coach Kelly it is said is offering fewer kids - I don't doubt it. But really of the kids that are seriously recruited what are those numbers? Who has a better hit rate? We were always more Furd than Oregon. UCLA always had kids it could not touch. Is it really more than before and if so how much more?

Right now Coach Kelly has the worst hit rate of any coach in UCLA history that I can remember, yes worse than Dorrell. Why is that? Whatever we want to make up as the reason the fact remains he is failing at a central part of his job, bringing in highly rated kids to UCLA. This is UCLA, full of kids that every school in the country would love to have, why is football doing so much worse?

What all the fuss is about. With a 2% ratio of kids in college who make it to the NFL and an even smaller percentage that even contribute, CCK is no fool. Every kid who gets recruited by a big five school seems to be enamored with this dream regardless of how good their skill set is and how much it evolves. With that being said, while he is not going to turn away a kid who has interest in UCLA and also has a focused desire to play in the NFL, CCK’s vision is much more centered on player development and building depth through that.

CCK is focused on building his football culture in a very no nonsense way. He has a system, he has the coaches, he has the facilities, and he has a historic venue kids suit up at least 6 Saturday’s during the season to play in. He is also part of a public academic institution that has very few peers. You either want to come to UCLA or you don’t.

Over the years UCLA football has been compared very negatively to USC in terms of player recruitment. Previous coaches have fallen flat on their face trying to overcome that stigma. I don’t think CCK cares one bit about how good USC recruits or any other school for that matter. I also don’t think he cares very much about the recruits he loses out on. He knows what he’s building, he know the type of player he wants, and based on his metrics, roughly how much a kid will contribute to his culture over that student/athlete’s 4 to 5 years in the program.

If CCK can take a lightly recruited kid from UC Davis who never rushed for more than 610 yds in a season and work him in as one of the prime contributors to his offense, while at the same time helping him become NFL ready, I really don’t think there is much more to say.

Chip's recruiting will work out spectacularly

Many here have already proclaimed Chip's recruiting to be a failure! His recruits don't carry four+ star ratings and players that "should" come here elect to go elsewhere.

Let's look at his record.

This coach at one time had two Heisman Trophy winners committed to his program at the same time. Both were 3*s. Johnny Manziel switched to TAM while Marcus Mariota remained.

This is the same coach who reached the pinnacle of CFB using offensive skill players like

LaMichael James (3*, offers from Arkansas, Minnesota, Mississippi St., Missouri, Nebraska, TCU, Tulsa)
Kenjon Barner (3*, offers from ASU, Utep)
Josh Huff (4*, Baylor, Buffalo, Colorado)
Darron Thomas (4*, Florida, LSU, Miami, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, Ok St.)
Jeff Maehl (3*, Cal, OrSt, Washington, Wassu)

and defensive skill players like

Casey Mathews (3*, ASU, Cal, Colorado, Georgia Tech, Ole Miss, SDSU, Utah)
John Boyett (3*, Stanford, Utah, Boise)
Spencer Paysinger (2*, Boise, Colorado, Wyoming)
Talmadge Jackson (3* Cal, Fresno, Ucla)
Eddie Pleasant (3*, ASU, Cal, OrSt, Washington)

The starting offensive line:
Bo Thran 3*
Carson York 3*
Jordan Holmes 2*
C. E. Kaiser 2*
Mark Asper 2*

The starting DL:
Terrell Turner, 3*
Brandon Bair, 2*
Zac Clark, 3*
Kenny Rowe, 4*

Throw shade on our coach at your peril. Great days ahead for Bruin football!
