Kelly Test

The star gazers here are miffed, but I'm not.

Kelly puts much more weight on a virtual "Kelly Test" (see Wunderlic Test from NFL).

His "Kelly Test" assays the kid's noodle. It determines whether the player will stick, whether he'll be able to assimilate, whether he'll be able/willing to absorb the playbook, whether the player will accept Kelly's style and discipline and, finally, whether the player can hack it at Ucla academically. If the answer to any of these is "no", the physical grade matters little since that player won't see the field.

What does it matter how physically gifted a player is if he doesn't pass the Kelly Test?

They'll deride it as "coach speak"

But it's only "coach speak" when you're not winning. When you're winning, it's that coach's "philosophy". The proof will be in the pudding. I think we will have a successful season, and many of the doubters will be, if not silenced, quieted. Though I will particularly never understand the "winning February" thing that has somehow taken hold, given that our Februaries have produced 128 wins in the last 19 seasons, aka 6.7 wins per season, with generally very good recruiting results every season. And the cherry on the top, 5 bowl wins in 14 bowl appearances. Yes, we need better classes, which I have said numerous times I believe will come with more wins. But even good UCLA classes have largely averaged jack all, so I'm content with some worse recruiting results if it means better results on the field, you know, where it actually matters.

The comment section on a Twitter post.

When UCLA finally starts winning consistently (if it happens in my lifetime), I'm gonna miss this.

by year 3 (all coaches are judged by year 3, not 1 or 2) then he can choose to recruit any type of athlete that he sees fit. The issue is if you have low ranked classes year after year and lose then that will be the reason pointed to by all. He is making it hard on himself by failing to recruit and land top local prospects while allowing UW, Oregon and USC to claim their territory here. He needs to get UCLA to that level on a year to year basis if he is the top coach most considered him to be. We will see how much improvement we have made in the first 3 games so it is there for all to see.
