Reading 24/7's UCLA's all time commits list is depressing

in the gut, especially the Dorrell/Neuheisel/Mora years.

-#1 overall program recruit? Jaelen Phillips. Not sure I need to add anything.
-#2 and #3 are EV and Josh Rosen, both well deserved.
-#4 Mique Juarez. That the #1 and #4 best recruits UCLA has *ever recruited* are total busts is... demoralizing.
-#5 Owa. Beast.
-#6 KLS. This shocked me. Hopefully he lives up to it this season.
-#8 Ellis McCarthy. Yikes.
-#9 Darnay, well deserved. Let's enjoy him this season, it will be his last.
-#10 Soso Jamabo... sigh.
-#11 Marcedes Lewis, Beast.
-#13 DTR, time will tell, but I am very optimistic. Word from Spaulding is that he looks much improved.
-#14, 15, and 16, probably the most disappointing trio in recent UCLA history: Devin Fuller, Morrell Pressley, and Priest Willis. So much talent. So little contribution.
-#17 Sua Filo. Beast.
-#21 Jordon James. Kind of astonished to see him this high, but still didn't contribute much, though he was a good team player.
-#22 Malcolm Jones. Woof.
-#23 Randall Carroll. Why do I do this to myself?
-#36 Richard Brehaut
-#39 Chris Clark
-#41 Kylie Fitts
-#42 Zach Whitley
-#44 Dietrich Riley, sad story.
-#46 Josh Wariboko

From what I can see, *at least* 15 of our top 50 ALL TIME recruits at this school were busts. Ouch.

How does this compare to other programs?

That list is troubling. I’m sure every program has kids who don’t pan out.

It’s not like you to focus on something negative.

That’s a rough list. When did they start the star system? This can’t be all time recruits right?

Phillips isn't a total bust

Come on, he played more than a year for us. Had a scooter accident and down from there

Thanks for the comic relief, but “all-time”?

“Woof”, LOL, you’re right though this is the most depressing list I’ve seen. But, not sure why Barr isn’t on the list is odd.

I also would think that players from the ‘80’s would dominate the list. Also, Jonathan Ogden - has to be top 10.

The depressing part is comparing the contributions of players from earlier eras to the current one. Geez, get me some Rolaids.

I have a theory though, in an effort to bring some bling to the program, Neu, and especially Mora, went for some “5 stars” who were issue laden, ignoring the warning signs. Give me Chip’s approach everyday.

was pretty good, he played with some injuries. Recruited originally as a QB then went the WR route. Did decently, wouldn’t put him in the same category as Willis and Pressley.

Various factors

-Straight up busts (part of recruiting)
-Injuries
-Off field issues including academics
-Bad coaching

I think all programs deal with these 4 but some more than others. UCLA more than usual on 3 and 4. Academic eligibility can be brutal for some of these guys. Hard to say if #1 more of an issue at UCLA. Perhaps but small sample size.

I think you’re undervaluing some of the contributions though given star level expectations. Yes, some of these guys whiffed but some contributed as starters and performed although not at the level we expected.

If you’re going to give Jordan James props I think Fuller should be in the camp that gave significant contribution too. He was a QB in high school, and contributed well as an upper-classman.

Donny Edwards? Carnell Lake? etc., etc., etc.

This list seems well short of reality.

Why are you taking these half-assed articles as truth?

It’s a laughable “All Time” list, written by someone that doesn’t even follow football.

Phillips as the best recruit ever is a joke. And they list Chase Moline but left out...

Just off the top of my head: Robert Thomas, Ricky Manning, Rodney Leslie, DeShaun Foster, Freddie Mitchell, Matthew Ware, MAURICE JONES DREW.

It’s a ridiculous list.

24/7/BRO and its precedessors only date back to ~2000

I recall that BRO cycled through Rivals and Scout before getting folded into 24/7. Tracy Pierson's been the only constant on that site, and it was more of a quasi independent fan site before it became part of Rivals. When Pierson moved BRO to Scout and Rich Kimbrel created Bruin Blitz to take BRO's place on Rivals, all of the previous recruiting ratings that dated back to at least 1997 got purged.

I doubt that this so-called "all-time" list goes further back than 2002, since it doesn't seem to include any of the multiple 5* recruits (as rated on BRO) that signed with UCLA in that #2-rated 1998 class -- Robert Thomas, Mike Saffer, DeShaun Foster, and Ken Kocher.
