Foster realizes recruiting is vital
Posted Fri, Dec 27 1:51 pm
To start my comments, let's accept almost every major CFB program will have players enter the portal they don't want to lose.

For UCLA, I think the main loss to the portal was Sturdivant. However, I don't blame him since I feel he departed because he has one season left to gain traction for the NFL draft and didn't feel like he would get it at UCLA based on his results from last season (see link below for one perspective).

https://www.si.com/college/ucla/football/did-ucla-bruins-make-major-mistake-with-departed-wr-01jftx0y0dfh

Do you think this outcome had something to do with the firing/release of Bieniemy as OC?

Like others, I wasn't sure about Foster becoming UCLA HC (I favored Tony White due to his DC experience) but I will continue to support him. Bruin supporters should at least give him a chance to implement his vision for the program. He loves UCLA and doesn't see it as a stepping stone to go elsewhere. He can provide continuity at HC if he's successful.

I also credit him for being decisive early. He has virtually overhauled the coaching staff from last season. Out went most of the older coaches with NFL background (but little experience dealing with college coaching and factors like recruiting and limited practice time). The portal has also changed recruiting and I feel Foster saw UCLA missed on some transfers last season (notably on the offensive side of the ball).

He has primarily brought in younger coaches with CFB background and recruiting experience. I believe Foster realizes in an era where NIL and the TP are major factors, you have to have coaches who can and want to recruit in order to bring in competitive talent. Coaching alone can only do so much.

UCLA at this point would be hard pressed to bring in the highest rated talent. However, build up the program by identifying chosen and interested players from HS and the portal. Coach these players and start to show winning results on the field. Be honest in your approach and you'll begin to attract better recruits.

I'm warming up to Coach Fos. So far, I like his moves this offseason. Considering that UCLA will never be a NIL football powerhouse (CHEAP on football & the Egg Heads like it that way) it's intriguing to see what this whole thing will look like in Fos' 4 or 5 year. The new young coaches bring a different energy to the program. Now if they can get some lineman developed on both sides of the ball...

should also help. Nebraska who we beat soundingly is beating on a team(smash mouth style) with a HC(O'Brien) you're very high on....it's only halftime though. Maybe O'Brien will prove his worth in 2nd half.

Your bedroom wall is pasted with news clippings and pictures of CDF with his eyes cut out? I'm assuming you've taken down shrine of Chip statue with offering of chopped up sheep head....

UCLA so far has brought in 18 from the TP

With the commitment of QB Aguilar, UCLA has brought in what I see as a balanced list of players from the TP so far. Aguilar may not have been among the highest rated but he has talent and playing experience. New OC Sunseri must see possibilities for him so I'm willing to see what happens before rushing to judgement. It's unlikely Aguilar broke the bank in terms of NIL since we all realize UCLA is not going to outspend many other power programs.

If Aguilar gives UCLA enough NIL funds to continue seeking transfers on both the offensive and defensive lines plus linebackers, I think that's a good move. Right now, UCLA is losing 19 (includes 2 kickers and a punter) and has commitments from 18 by position:
1 - QB
2 - WR
3 - OL (1 OT, 2 IOL)
3 - DL (1 DT, 2 Edge)
1 - LB
4 - CB
4 - S

Returning/new DB coach Martin has again shown his recruiting skills in refilling the secondary. I'm expecting new OL coach Kwon, new LB coach White, and DC Malloe (maybe a new DL coach?) to add transfers to this list.

Ranked 9th right now.

https://www.on3.com/transfer-portal/team-rankings/football/2025/

Not that it means a lot, but they have Aguilar as the 13th ranked qb in the portal and Martin as 24th.

I liked the kid, wanted him to play over Stinky, but there is no world where he would or should be rated close to Aguilar.

Happy for DF. We are working it... hope springs eternal...

Aguilar is way better than Martin

Those rankings are accurate.

One QB has a lot of experience and has played well, the other had 3 decent drives vs PSU and then did nothing.

Maybe Martin will end up just as good or better but right now, Joey deserves to be ranked significantly higher.

J-Mart might also end up being a flop at Maryland. Nobody has seen enough to know.

I was about to argue your headline.... and realized your context is exactly what I would've written.....so we really don't know If one is way better until Martin gets his chance. But I'm with you in that I'd definitely take Aguilar's proven production over Martin's so called potential. I'm gonna steal a quote from a movie.." I'd choose you(Aguilar) any day of the week and twice on Sunday(Saturday in this scenario?) "
