If anyone wants to know why two #11 seeds
Posted Mon, Mar 15 11:48 am (Edited Mon, Mar 15 11:52 am)
have to do a play in game.
There are two classifications that have to do play in games. The first is the lowest four teams with automatic berths. The second is the lowest ranked at large teams. So basically we were one of the last four in.

We wouldn’t have been selected had the tournament remained 64/65 teams. I’m fine with a play-in game. My issue is that they pit the top two teams against each other and the lower two teams together. In normal seasons this is done for planning purposes so that the game is played somewhere nearby the first round pod. This season though with everything in Indiana, UCLA and Michigan State shouldn’t be forced to play against each other. They should each play the two lowest at large teams. It’s like UCLA (and Michigan State) were punished for being better than those two other teams.

... to draw maximum viewer interest to the late game.

If Nobody State were playing Whatsamatta U instead at 10PM ET, the advertisers' cash registers don't go ka-ching near as often. I don't lose sight of the primary reason this tournament was ballooned to its current, overblown size a long time ago: advertising money. Michigan State and UCLA are the big market and regional draws of the pair of play-in series.

These GOAT discussions are fun distractions while sitting around waiting for the pizza to be served.

There going to have a lot of Magic-Kareem coverage. They’ll probably interview them before the game. It’s all about getting those ratings.

First four not based on seed but for the round of 64

I believe the play-in games are not based on the seeding of the teams in the first four but on the first round of the "real" 64 team tournament. In this tournament, the highest ranked 6th seed is SC (ugh) so they should face the lowest ranked 11th seed. By Drake playing Wichita State in the first four, this pairing by seed in the round of 64 is met for SC's first game.

I don't know if I explained that clearly but that's my understanding.
