Larry is/was considered one of the top Under Armour coaches. Considering the type of talent Utah had been able to attract his teams have tended to overproduce rather than underproduce. The problem though is that he was being overpaid. My sense is that this is a course correction on his salary more than anything else. We'll see when we compare to the next hire.

I thought Krystkowiak was doing a good job at Utah. However, coaching success is often based on recent history. In addition, he was well paid at over $3 million a year during a time when colleges are grappling with revenue shortfalls due to the pandemic.

I imagine the Pac12 coach happiest he is gone is Enfield since he's 1-6 against Utah.

Yeah, the program slumped. I wanted Larry for our school, a lot. He had the energy and game resume to recruit hard, he projected positive presence in person, and he taught toughness, rebounding and defensive interest.

Recruiting to that area is always challenging, so I assumed that Larry was hampered recently if not fully frustrated by Kyle Kuzma's not doing his former coach any favors. The bashing of college life near the great salt lake that Kyle as a pro dished out a few years back probably can be assumed to have become a negative factor. I reckon local social and cultural (I think it was "bunker mentality") Kuzma referenced had the effect - be unintended or not - to cut out Utah from consideration among any number of prospects on quality of community and campus life considerations alone.

To me, LK is very much cut from the same bolt of coaching basketball cloth as Mick Cronin, stylistically, his animation, methods and values. I think we're in good shape now.

Just not as fun for your typical college kid. One of my best friend’s daughter went there as a D1 athlete and started as a frosh but came home after one year. One of her best friends on the team got married and she was kind of like this is not what a 19 year old should be doing. To each is own, but if you are looking for a social life this is probably not optimal. Also not very diverse which makes it a challenge for some sports in recruiting. The hoops and football teams have been pretty successful with these challenges however.

... in football. Has won 8+ games in thirteen of the past 20 seasons, six of 'em since joining the PAC.

Not a bad record at all (considering the discussion) especially compared to our own school's recent history. In the same decade since Utah joined our conference, UCLA's wrapped just four seasons of 8+ wins.
