Is there even going to be a basketball
Posted Tue, Dec 28 12:40 pm
season, this year? Bowl game cancelled, now there haven't been basketball games for a month, along with no practices. Amazing that most of of the country is still playing, except for the west coast. As strict as the west coast has been with Covid, you'd think that people would be further from harms way.

I can’t even remember…this is godawful for our players, especially considering this was the most hyped team since the Kevin love squad…

The Marquette game right after final exams, and right after the scheduled UW game from the week before was cancelled.

Hopefully, the team can get back to full strength and have a reset for the Bay Area roadie. That road trip not a foregone conclusion, given that Stanford cancelled their Christmas Day game last week, although for now, the Cal-Stanford game on Sunday remains on the schedule.

There will be a season, but not as scheduled

We've already seen impromptu scheduling on the fly in football, with bowl games looking for replacement opponents and UCLA scheduling Cal as a replacement opponent last year on just two days' notice.

For basketball, Pac-12 games for now have been "postponed." But, postpone enough games and you no longer have a workable schedule as replacement dates fill up.

If things keep going the way they have, I think that the Pac-12 schedule is going to just match up whichever teams are available on any given week (or day). We're in the conference schedule now, so nearly all of the remaining games in the Pac-12 won't involve cross-country travel. Those can be rescheduled on shorter notice if it comes down to that.

Hopefully the team builds up immunity now

For the rest of the season. We need volunteers keep the players in check, make sure there’s no partying and interacting with people until April 8th. After that, they can do as they please.

that still won't stop a player from catching covid and still end up in protocol

i think nba has a sliding rule concerning those who are vaxxed and those who are not etc etc. i believe the protocol time varies. and of course UCLA is just one of 400 schools, or 1of12 if you prefer

i'd be willing to bet the p12 might have an open playoff series to send the most qualified teams AT THAT TIME,,,to the march playoffs

Curious how we're going to slide in the UA, ASU games...

before the P12 Tourney in Vegas. Was looking forward to spanking both this week and ring in the new year. I think with what happened to the boys after Marquette and now, most unfortunately our fball program, this will get us to refocus and laser in on what is needed to improve and achieve regular season and post-season goals. Having Cody back is huge and hope the brace he's wearing on the practice court comes off when he steps on the floor on Jan 6th for some payback up north.

UA already rescheduled their game against UW for a Tuesday (already have a Thursday game, and pushed back a previously scheduled Saturday game to Sunday). So, one solution will be to play three games on those weeks with rescheduled games.

UCLA has both games against Southern Cal scheduled over the weekends on Feb 12 and Mar 5. So, UCLA has the weekdays during those weeks currently open. Before Howland's tenure, UCLA would schedule Southern Cal during the week and then do a big non-conference matchup over the weekend (one of which would be against Notre Dame). Now, UCLA treats the Southern Cal games as bye weeks. I know that the coaches like the extra rest, but it looks like the schedule will be packed in.

And things will get really dicey if outbreaks happen with more P12 teams. Then, you'll start seeing more weeks with 3 games scheduled, or games scheduled at the last minute matching up teams based on whether they are available to play.

I remember when I was there during the Harrick days we'd play Duke and other big name schools in the middle of the Pac 10 season. And yes, always ND.

Basketball returns to Pauley on Wednesday

The ASU game is going to play the previously scheduled 1/1 game at Pauley on Wednesday, because Stanford had to postpone the scheduled matchup against the Bruins. ASU already filled this weekend's schedule opening by playing Cal (whose game against Stanford was also postponed) in Berkeley.

As much of a mess as the schedule has become, the Bruin basketball team returns to action this week. Play the games where you can find them. ASU was available, while UA had already scheduled a makeup against UW. So, UCLA checked ASU off the schedule card, but still has to find dates for UA and now Stanford. As I wrote elsewhere, prepare to see more 3-game weeks if/when more postponements occur.

with our Bruins re-starting engine You're spot on with the fluid scheduling and potential 3-gm weeks which will be tough but doable.

The official schedule typically gets updated first before any of the official releases and tweets go out. And it will always have the TV and radio info. (the official release will typically include the streaming info as well)
