UCLA offers two more 2024 recruits
Posted Thu, Jul 28 10:08 pm
HC Cronin and his staff continue their recruiting efforts. One offer is to a PG, among the top 5 at his position for 2024. He supposedly was interested in getting a UCLA offer.

The other is to a rising SF, now rated in the top 10 at his position.

An interesting side note is the article on Ali notes UCLA has now offered 14 recruits for 2024, 11 who play outside of CA. Is this a nod to the upcoming entrance to the Big Ten or is the 2024 class in CA weaker than usual?

Something inside me just doesn't get this. Yes I'm biased, but it will be a rebuilding year for UCLA, and you'd think there would be players dying to play here. I can't believe we haven't signed one that believes were his dream school! It's UCLA for cryin out loud! Okay, just had to get that off my chest.

IMO, it's clearly NIL.

All these kids are gunning for NIL money, and we're lagging way behind in that department. Hopefully our new financial lease on life will allow more donor money to flow to NIL instead of keeping the program afloat.

That some of the big players saw how little he played Peyton? We discussed this at the time…. I know the guy isn’t very popular around these parts but dare I say recruits and families were watching the way Cronin handled his first 5 star?

Obviously this is all speculation but coming off a final four and a sweet 16 it’s either that or what Oswego is saying…. There’s no reason schools should have 4 and 5 top commits already when we have none…

If Collier and Holland were locks I would worry less. I imagine Cronin will recover and do fine —- but Peyton was the first real 5 star. Now he has two more with Bailey and Bona — it’s a different situation but I hope he considers the look when he benches guys for entire games.

Cronin is his own man

Cronin is never going to play a player because of the look it sends to future recruits. He is all about winning. There is no promises for PT under Cronin, it must be earned. Given the anticipated turnover in 23 of the roster as well, I highly doubt any 5 star is truly worried about PT at UCLA at the moment. If they choose not to commit, it will be for other reasons With that said, I am sure Watson’s lack of PT could hurt Cronin in some smaller circles ( like kids being trained by DC or LB Poly players), but any repercussions from PW will be short lived. In the grand scheme of things, the broader message that nothing is handed to you at UCLA and you must compete, will serve the program much better in the long run. While you want 5 stars, you want to get the ones with the right mindset.

We should hope that there still is a good number of the really good 2023 preps who decide to wait until next Spring to sign their letter of intent. If this year's Bruin team can come blasting out of the starting gate with the up-tempo ball our coach has been promising, win the important pre-conference intersectional games, and take the lead in the Pac 12 race, Coach Cronin might be able to counter much of the negative recruiting that has been directed his way.

Getting long minutes from Bona and Bailey will be crucial to our recruiting success, as well.

That speculation will be gone with the wind ...

when they see how real five stars like Bona and Bailey perform at UCLA.

I am very excited about the coming season, with incoming freshmen having really performed in real competition, not just paper rankings based on smoke and mirrors.

It isn't just for UCLA Watson did not do anything. He didn't do anything all year, in all competition: FIBA World U19 championships, UCLA, NBA summer league. Uniformly low 30% FG, low to under 20% 3FG.

the staff feels good about a few 23 kids.

say our Bruins do not land Staj; not a problem; Dominic Harris; Dusty Stromer; or Donoven Dent.

our Bruins whiff on I Miranda; Critter will have his bags packed.

are our Bruins better off with a ranked recruit or experienced bench warmer?

it's always been about "getting minutes" to these kids and 23/24 will offer plenty of oppty at UCLA. So, what's going on? Imo, I think the JRock video (that OP refers to) seems to illustrate the issue that OB is pointing out, and I'm going to paraphrase, JRock sez - "if your dream school is offering you NIL $ to boot, then that is a no brainer. If you're looking to see which school is going to offer you the most NIL $, I think you should focus on the bigger picture and your career if the next level/NBA is your goal. The $ you make in your career will dwarf the NIL $, which school is best equipped to get you there?". Look at the guys that played for US that came from the Compton Magic... it's sick, they ALL signed a deal with an NBA team... isn't that the goal? Hello, Drej... cmon maaannn, hahaha, Go Bruins. Don't know about you but that dude over there at Pukie is an unknown as a HC, and wait till you get in Pauley when we're really rockin and rollin like we're going to do this year, believe me

it would not shock me if a 24 reclassify to 23.
