Let’s Go Over The Details About Aday Mara

Here’s a primer list on Aday Mara

1. Yes, this is the recruit 123456 has been hinting at for some time.

2. His father Francisco briefly played professionally in Spain. His mother was on Spain’s national Volleyball team.

3. I was also aware UCLA was on Mara and have been analyzing his (entire) game film for at least a couple months. If he played in the US I have no doubt held be the No. 1 ranked Center. In fact because his unicorn skills translate to being the first ever Point Center he’d likely be No. 1 overall recruit.

4. The Bruin staff has been working on this for months, and it’s amazing it was on the QT until 2 days before the Spring signing
period.

5. I see a couple posters think he’s as thin as Chet Holmgren, who played in high school at 7’0” and 190 pounds. Mara is 7’ 2.5” and carries 240#.

6. He was born April 7th, 2005. Which makes him 18 years and 3 days old. Right in line with this years non-holdbacks seniors.

7. Aday has been playing in mixed amateur / professional leagues for some time now, and does NOT shy away from contact. It should also vibe mentioned the old days of sift Euro ball are long gone. If anything the Euro game is more physical than NCAA ball. Especially in the whistle happy PAC 12 LOL

8. His name would be pronounced Ah day Ma da.

9. Aday is a great athlete who runs the court almost as fast as Adam Bona, and could also give Adem a run for his money on quickness getting off the floor. I don’t recall ever seeing a 7 footer who could pass this well.

10. Lastly

If I had a comparison, I'd say it's probably Kevin Love with height and without the rebounding. He's got superb touch around the basket, nice feel for the offensive game, incredible vision for a big man, a really nice passing touch, and a pretty strong handle. He's also got nice defensive timing, which is crucial, and he runs the floor well for a guy of his size.

That said, he's not a leaper (few 7'2+ guys are), he's got really skinny legs, and I think this hurts him when he's trying to get position on stronger players. I don't see much of a rebounding instinct, but it's hard to say. He does put up good per 40 rebound numbers, so who knows. He doesn't have a 3pt shot, but looks like he's developing a midrange game, which would be great if he brought it.

Overall, he's an absolute take. Guys with his size and length are rarer than rare, especially who have his skill level.

I don't claim to know all either but it's hard to think UCLA fans wouldn't be happy if Cronin and Simovic were able to close on a legit 7-3 post player they have been pursuing for some time. Per the 247 Sports link below, Mara was measured at that height and weighed in at 243 pounds during a recent Basketball Without Borders Global Camp in Utah.

He's considered a UCLA lean (not a pun) but it does make you wonder if he's interested in the Bruins because Bona may be headed to the NBA. Of course, what would be better is if Cronin believes and has told him he can play alongside Bona next season.

He is viewed as a first round NBA draft pick and wants to improve his skills playing BB in the US. I'm sure it wouldn't hurt UCLA recruiting if its players started to end up being first round NBA draft picks. That's not Cronin's nor my primary goal but it could help UCLA get enough elite players to win the title.
