Ugly Game
Posted Thu, Dec 28 6:58 pm
But I guess at this point that is expected. Let’s face it, the only way UCLA wins going forward it will be ugly. They’re going to have to squeeze as much from offense as possible. Even open shots are not easy.

I do find it surprising and encouraging that UCLA does not get blown out. Even on halves where they looked completely outplayed for most of the half they manage to claw back.

Forcing turnovers and avoiding fouls

The turnover margin at the half is 8-5, and UCLA has only been called for 4 fouls. The offense is horrendous, but the Bruins made a late run to get to within two possessions at the half. Brandon Williams picked a great time to hit his first trey as a Bruin. He's earning more playing time.

Any road win in conference is a plus. If UCLA wants to make the NCAAs, they have to stick to that tried and true formula in conference play -- hold serve at home, get the road split. If they can escape Corvallis with the W, then the Oregon game can only help.

Bruins up by 12 thanks to 25-9 edge in 2nd chance pts

Bruins are now running the floor, despite Sebastian Mack in foul trouble. 25-9 edge in 2nd chance points, and 20-8 edge in the paint. Fouls are not a factor, and I think that has helped. It's a totally different game if Bona picked up early fouls.

UCLA has already scored more in the 2nd half than they did in the entire 1st half.

Still a ways to go, but the Bruins have responded and have a pulse.

I love how Spaz is Spaz -- attack mode. Clearly he is going to be REALLY good one day. But Spaz is out of control.

45 points + 53% shooting in 2nd half = BruWIN

Five Bruins scored in double figures to pull away from the Beavers in the 2nd half. UCLA tightened up on defense and erased a 9 point 1st half deficit to build up a 14 point lead in the 2nd half. The Beavers made a run and pulled to within 7 points, but the Bruins held and got the road win.

A road sweep would be exactly what UCLA needs to get the season back in order. Bruins in position to do that on Saturday.

Brandon Williams has been taking the big steps that we've seen from other players under Cronin. He earned more minutes with his effort tonight. Mara only played 2 minutes. Mack did not have a great game, while Andrews and Bona led UCLA with 13 points each. Only 7 scorers, but everyone made big baskets when needed.

Probably the most shocking stat was UCLA going 60% from 3 point range in the 2nd half.

"breaking bad habits"

Cronin is always an interesting postgame interview. His reaction to NIL is basically, players need to make plays, make the pass, don't focus on yourself, do what's needed to help the team win. He's basically saying "let me worry about your career" and mentioning that AAU and junior leagues overseas teach bad habits. Cronin says that it's all about breaking those bad habits and teaching toughness.

Clearly, he's focused on the next play and the next possession, and trying to get his players into the same mindset.

Play really good defense

Force turnovers and push the ball up the court. Buckets in transition.

Say it again - buckets in transition. We have a speedy PG. Unleash him.

Half court offense is obviously going to be an issue this season. So get a turnover, get a def rebound and run run run.

- Oregon State isn't a very good team. Any road win is a good win, but I'm not sure how much we learned about this team, and we didn't exactly dominate.

- Lots of deserved praise for Brandon Williams. Pretty amazing what you can do when you get consistent, extended playing time. He clearly looks much more comfortable at the 4 than the 3, which causes roster problems for us, especially with Mick's unfathomable tendency to play Nwuba over Mara.

- This engine of this team is an aggressive Dylan, we need it. The offense just comes alive when he takes charge of initiating, which he barely did in the first half, deferring to Bona/McClendon/Stefanovic. Lo and behold we have a decent offense in the second half. Defensively, Dylan needs a lot of improvement. The opposite of these two points is true for Mack.

- Stefanovic's minutes continue to baffle me. He contributes very little to my eyes, and I watched him basically all game. If nothing else, he took fewer shots this game, which helped us tremendously. He played a decent game overall, but he was not "37 minutes" good. To my point: He's now 8th in win shares per 40 minutes, a pretty clear indictment of his contributions, well behind both Fibleuil and McClendon.

- Nwuba finishes with 0s across the board, and 3 fouls. Are we honestly a better team with him getting 8 minutes and Mara getting 2? Now? The future? I just don't understand Cronin's choices, and will never.

- Berke needs more minutes, but so do all the Euros.
