In response to WBB: #1 UCLA vs #8 Richmond 7pm PT ESPN (Woochifer)

Bruins looked like they were pulling away in the 2nd quarter, but Richmond got hot from the floor again and they're now shooting 65% from the floor. UCLA is securing the ball better and forcing turnovers, but they are barely winning the rebounding battle. The Bruins will need to tighten up defensively and get Richmond into more of a half court slugfest.
I doubt that Richmond can maintain this shooting pace, so we'll see if the Bruins can maintain some distance in the 2nd half that they weren't able to sustain in the 2nd quarter. |

Bruins dismantled the Spiders in that 3rd quarter. Outscoring them 29-7 and ending the quarter on a 23-2 run.
Richmond could not keep up the shooting pace and cooled their overall FG % from 65% to 47%. UCLA is still shooting 50% and got hot from 3 point range.
UCLA was +8 in the 3rd quarter in rebounding. Richmond now looks tired. They’re not only missing from distance but missing layups as well.
The crowd is also really into it now. |

Richmond made a bit of a run in the 4th. But UCLAkept the game at a comfortable margin. Betts and Rice led the way.
The 3rd quarter run was decisive in this one. Richmond had that shooter’s chance. But the Bruins were able to contain the Spiders long enough to put the game out of reach |

One of the things I like about the women's game (aside from playing 4 quarters like every other level of organized basketball) is how the top seeds get to host the first two NCAA tournament rounds. Yes, it's a home court advantage. But, it's also a goal and a reward for earning a top-4 seed. I like that UCLA earns a #1 seed and gets to play 2 extra games at Pauley.
As the Bruins went on that decisive 3rd quarter run against Richmond, the crowd became a big factor and the players afterwards noted how the crowd gave them a lift coming out of halftime.
Here's a video of the players roaming around Pauley after the game to salute the crowd. One of the great moments from the game, in addition to when Coach Close took a timeout late to take Betts out of the game and enjoy the ovation from the fans (Betts' 30 points and 14 rebounds were the first postseason 30-10 game in program history).
