I feel disappointed about UCLA yearly misses
Posted Wed, Apr 02 5:09 pm
It was great that we signed Dent but it came with a cost of losing Mara. Not good. It tells me we are not in the top 5 of money like a few people have said to be able to keep both. Next, after watching the McDonalds High School All American, it’s sad that we do not have at least one player that is committed to us. I believe that is a big miss in recruiting. To many times we have seen misses on recruiting the last few years that doesn’t help us in the season. Now we are scrambling again to find a great center/forward but don’t have the money to get the best and grabbing subpar players in the portal that will only be a miss in league. We saw what money buys you when you pay to play. Cronin’s other Achilles hill is recruiting and recruiting the right players. To many misses the last few years. This is the last straw I have for Cronin. If he can’t figure it out this year, we have to let him go. Sorry for the rant but upset about the miss on Mara and recruiting in general.

Lot’s of talk about not having enough money

But you want to eat at Mickey D’s. McDonald’s costs a lot more than it used to and sometimes someone else’s leftovers are healthier for you anyway. A Big Mac a day will get you killed.

I think you need one elite player that can get you buckets and you need to get that guy some way, some how. The rest is fill in the blanks and it is probably easier to mix and match in the portal than to bet on an 18 year old. Either way, you need to stop off at the bank.

2 mil to start, then another mil during the year. I wonder how much of a dent(ha!) that put in our NIL.

I think we paid Dent the money he needs but then didn’t have enough money to pay Mara when he sought more. So it played part. Overall we are not a top 10 team with money like people have said. Money is still the issue to getting us a great team. Next year there is a lot of high school All Americans players out California. At the bare minimum we need to a least land 2 of them if not three. Top 5 in the rankings for the CA kids. Let see if we have enough money to get them.

How can they justify limiting players’ income short of a collective bargaining agreement?

There are a lot of sensitive people on this board. That's all I can say on this topic.

Till Dent. Other players were mediocre or subpar. We need to follow the women’s way a recruiting talent.

Here's the reality

Cronin might be a good fit for those who need three to four years to develop. McDonald's all American? Through out his 20 plus D1 head coach career, how many NBA stars he developed? Zero.

Jaime Jacquez not too bad

Cronin has definitely had players that showed improvement during his time here. Bernard, though not an NBA player looked a lot better as a senior. And Jaylen Clark is establishing a niche as a glue guy. I agree that in general those success stories are be more in the "late first round/early second round" range. The pre-transfer portal era in my view fit Cronin's player development profile the best, but that is never coming back.

It may be hard to compete on a championship level if you don't sprinkle in some top end talent that create matchup problems. San Diego State two years ago shows that sometimes with a well oiled team and a lucky draw a less talented team can have a good run - but eventually you need to beat an elite talent team to win a title. I would consider someone like Dent to be a college player of that caliber, even if with his size he is not a prototypical NBA star. We will need another player to step as a star though.

Sure but Jacquez wasn't a Cronin recruit.

Developed under Cronin, sure. But he's not playing much these days. He had a really nice entry into the NBA, but he's now a rotation player *even* with the departure of Jimmy Butler.

Jaylen Clark is finally healthy, but only playing about 12mpg. Same with Bona.

Johnny Juzang is a rotation player, getting about 20mpg, which isn't really that great considering how terrible the Jazz are.

The real irony is the Cronin player getting the most minutes in the NBA right now (on an excellent team no less) is Peyton Watson.

Not a great look that Cronin's least-used high-ranking recruit has the most important role of Cronin Bruins in the NBA.

He Was A Cronin Recruit

Highest priority, but Cronin was at Cincinnati at the time.

Both Cronin and Jaime have spoken about that publicly many times.

Jaime sometimes jokes that Cronin took the UCLA job just so he could coach him.
