I am betting no other 5 comes our way. There really is not any significant minutes for a third string center on our team, so if we brought in two experienced 5s that want the chance to play and would require some NIL, this would seem to be the slots. If there was a better center to grab then these two that was within our budget, we would have done so already. Now if we picked up a Devin Williams type who is young and willing to play only spot minutes to set the stage for next year, that would be different. We won't have anyone as special as Mara at the 5, but my hope is that we will at least have players who perhaps better fit Cronin's offensive/defensive scheme then Mara did. Cody Riley was on our final 4 team, so we can get by with ok players if other positions step up.
Not sure if we have much budget left, but a 3 would be something that could fit well, ideally someone with decent size, athleticism, and rebounding. A Jaylen Clark type would be amazing, but of course they are hard to find.
Overall for our NIL, I would describe it as good but maybe not elite. We have the NIL depth perhaps of a top 25 program, but there are going to be elites that outclass us. Apparently last year we spend a little under $14M, while Duke spent over $22M and Kentucky $24M this year https://www.nil-wire.com/p/new-post-3eed. That doesn't mean that we can't beat those teams, Houston's NIL would not have matched up with Dukes. Duke and Kentucky can make more big bets. And we would also competing against a lot of schools that like us can only go all in a few times. The big question is, without unlimited resources, can we have good judgement in swinging big on difference makers, while recognizing underrated talent that fit our system. Supposedly we spent more NIL this year then Houston and Florida this year, so this budget could be doable.
