Some of these names must sound familiar to the old among us...

I feel old.

I recall when the "NBA Summer League" used to be played at Cal State LA.

George Gervin, Dr. J, Dan Issel, guys like that, would show up before or during the merger. But for some technical reason, anyone could play.

Paul Westphal, who broke John Wooden's heart and scored over 20 PPG for the Celtics in 1975-76, found himself matched up against a Celtic draft pick, Ron Lee, 6-4 G Oregon, built like a tight end.

Westphal tries to be black... Lee strips him and dunks it.

Westphal tries it again... Lee strips him and dunks it.

Westphal tries it again... Lee strips him, then throws the ball down as hard as he can so it bounces 12 feet up into the air as he screams in his future teammate's face: "Don't cross over on me!"

The refs don't care that Lee grabs the ball when it comes down and dunks it at the other end.

Westphal actually looked like he was going to cry. Just SC... baby.

Those were the days.

I also remember when some guy listed as 6-6 from Ventura College showed up with an entourage... 50 guys.

Really.

The NBA guys were laughing... until the guy scored 56 points and his team won 141-122 (defense wasn't allowed unless Ron Lee was on the floor).

And every time he scored, usually by taking off 8-10 feet from the basket and dunking it, his entourage rose up and roared: "Ceballos! Ceballos! Ceballos!"

And now we have a Ceballos... and a Murray at Glendora...

I'm old.

But loving it.
