Best defensive team in recent UCLA WWP history

From what I have seen, this appears to be one of the strongest defensive teams UCLA has placed in the pool. Hoping this factor will propel UCLA to another championship.

UCLA did not have much trouble today dispatching #17 Wagner in the opening round of the NCAA Championship, winning by a final score of 17-7.

In the other quarterfinal match on UCLA's side of the bracket, #4 Stanford had an easy time getting by #5 Southern Cal. So, the Bruins will play the Cards at 2pm PT on Saturday.

Two more quarterfinal matches left to play today with both #2 Hawaii and #3 Cal in action.

The women's water polo team remains undefeated thanks to a 10-8 win in the NCAA semifinal match. The match wasn't as close as the final score, as Stanford got a couple of goals in the final minute with the Bruins milking the clock. Match was tied 4-4 at halftime, but the Bruins extended out to a 10-6 lead with less than 4 minutes to go.

Tomorrow at 7pm PT, UCLA will play the winner of the 2nd semifinal match between #2 Hawaii and #3 Cal. Bruins looking to lock up #123 and their 1st national championship in women's water polo since 2009.

UCLA plays Cal for the WWP NCAA title tomorrow

Checked the Hawaii website and it showed Cal beat them 9-6 in the other semifinal. A 6-2 edge in the second period was the key.

UCLA can finish a great season by winning the title on the opponent's home facility (similar to what the men's VB team did earlier against LB State). UCLA can also beat the program the conference is trying to subsidize with an annual $10 million calimony settlement for the next six years.

WWPolo: NCAA title match tied 1-1 after 1st period

Not a lot of scoring so far in the NCAA championship match between #1 UCLA and #3 Cal. The match is deadlocked at 1-1 after the 1st period.

The Bruins had at least 3 shots hit the post, while the Bruins have turned the ball over 3 times.

Very evenly played so far, with not a lot of balls going into the net. Bruins haven't trailed, but the score is tied 2-2 at the half. Anyone's match at this point.

UCLA leads 4-3 going into final period

Bruins are one period away from claiming their 1st national title since 2009. But, it's still anybody's match. The Bruins got a couple of goals in the 3rd period and had hit another post as time expired.

Still a very defensive battle.

They're in a timeout. I'm not sure if goals are reviewable, but that last UCLA goal was borderline. If the score holds, that's close as it comes to a clincher.

BruWIN! WWP wins #123! And #8!

Into the pool they go! The Bruins only allowed 1 goal in each period. They got the empty cage goal at the end and that made the final 7-4 score.

Freshman goalie Lauren Steele was nails once again. And freshman Panni Szegedi scored a hat trick tonight. This team was ranked #4 going into the season with a lot of question marks because of theiryouth. But, they came through with a dominant season. Next season will be very interesting because two-time defending national champion Stanford had 3 players sitting out this season to train for the Olympics, who will presumably be back for the Cards next season.

But, right now, the Bruins are on top once again.

Really close for a half but with how tough the Bruin D was playing, I thought they could pull it off with a few breaks on offense.

Eases some of the sting from 2017 & 2015. Great win!

They went undefeated in the regular season as well under Coach Wright, but proceeded to lose in the MPSF tournament and in the NCAA final. Glad to see Coach Wright get his first NCAA title with the women's team after coming agonizingly close a couple of years ago.

And this is a young team that might be even better next season. But, both Southern Cal and Stanford will also be better with the return of their Olympians. Exciting times ahead for the program.

Most Outstanding Player GK Steele should still be in HS!

Freshman goalie Lauren Steele was named Most Outstanding Player of the NCAA tournament. She only joined the Bruins in January after graduating from high school a semester early. She was one of the young players that led the Bruins to exceeding all expectations en route to the 5th undefeated season in NCAA women's water polo history, and the 3rd for UCLA.

Here's the Daily Bruin article.

Steele was fantastic today as was the UCLA WWP defense

That was a tough battle as NCAA Championships should be when you reach the finals but UCLA capped an undefeated season (26-0) by winning the title. I noted earlier I felt this was the best UCLA WWP defensive team in years.

Holding Cal to 4 goals for the entire match was outstanding and I thought GK Steele was at the top of her game today (17 saves). Steele being a freshman on top of it means UCLA has a GK who should get even better over the next few seasons.
