Women’s Golf NCAA Semis
Posted Tue, May 21 3:30 pm
Playing to get into the finals. A little more than halfway through the match. Up in most of the semi matches vs OR. Barring a total collapse should play in the finals tomorrow vs winner of Stanford/SC. All P-12 semis.

Got a little hairy at the end but Natalie Vo closed it out 2&1. Other two matches had OR in the lead. Go Bruins!!!

UCLA will play #1 Stanford for the natty.

I didn't realize until I saw your post that the semifinals were played today as well.

I still hate the match play format. But, if UCLA wins this one, it at least make up for the one that the Bruins lost in the 1st year of match play when they came into the NCAA tournament ranked #1 and came out on top in the stroke play tournament, only to be eliminated on the first day of match play.

That was a painful year

to watch because they had a star-studded lineup and would have won in the old format.

I don’t think the Stanford match is done yet though they’re leading in 2 out of 3 remaining matches. All squared 1-1 for now.

Not sure who I want our Bruins to face.

The live scoring posts the wins and losses even if the matches aren't done yet. I saw that Stanford is leading in 2 of the matches while tied in the other one.

Amazing that the Bruins won the semifinal despite Zoe Campos taking the loss in her match.

Yeah, that first year of match play was infuriating, because I thought UCLA got jobbed out of a national championship. I've always said that switching to match play to decide the national champion would be like baseball going through the playoffs, and then changing the scoring format for the World Series to counting who wins the most innings. I still hate the format, but if UCLA wins the natty under match play after finishing more than 20 strokes behind in stroke play, I'll take it.

I wonder how much of a difference in recruiting

philosophy, if any, the format change has influenced Coach Um-Homes approach to recruiting.

She went out and got several players via the portal last summer. I wonder how many of them are stronger match players than stroke players. Of course you want both, but if you can squeeze into the match play format, you’ve got the studs with mental toughness to compete.

Not looking good for UCLA WG

It's been a mixed bag for both teams. Unfortunately, Stanford has put up the first point of the match and has sizable leads in two other matches on the back nine. UCLA leads in two with one match being close at the first spot. Golf is a funny game so it's not over until it's over.

Looks like Furd will win this one

Very rare that the #1-ranked team comes out on top in stroke play and then wins again in match play, but it looks like Stanford will do that.

The Bruins' top 2 players -- Campos and Canales are ahead late. But, none of the other 3 golfers have been able to make up ground on the back 9. Each of them are down by at least 3 strokes.

UPDATE: Natalie Vo just made up 1 stroke on 15. She will need to make up 2 more on the final 3 holes for the Bruins to have a chance.

Furd wins 3-2

The top 2 Bruin golfers, Zoe Campos and Caroline Canales, won their matches. UCLA needed to find one more win from the other 3 to win this. But, after making up 1 stroke late, Natalie Vo gave it right back on the 16th hole, and that was it, as Stanford was far enough ahead to take the other 2 points.

Impressive outing for 1st year HC Um-Holmes. She was an internal hire (long time Bruin assistant coach) and got the Bruins within a couple of strokes of the natty, and the Bruins' highest finish in match play.

I agree with you - I think UCLA achieved more than expected under first year HC Um-Holmes. They were not expected to make it to the finals of the NCAA Championships, let alone battle for the title. Assuming players return, the only senior in the lineup today was Villegas (Canales, Campos, and Vo are juniors, Royal a sophomore). UCLA brings in two recruits to fill a top 10 ranked class (Stanford is first). The future remains bright.

WG HC Um-Holmes wins Coach of the Year honors

This was announced earlier this month but wanted to give credit to HC Um-Holmes of the UCLA women's golf team. She was named women's coach of the year in her first season by Golfweek. This was a well deserved honor as UCLA exceeded expectations as they reached the finals of the NCAA Tournament.
