Nick Newman Hired to Coach Jumps and Multis at UCLA
Posted Thu, Jul 25 10:31 pm
Joanna Hayes has added an excellent assistant coach to her staff, a good sign for the future of track and field in Westwood. Nick Newman has had success as a recruiter and a developer of talent at Auburn, Tennessee, USC and Cal. An Englishman, Newman was a good long jumper in his day (25-7 PR), but since then, he's become one of the better jumps coaches in the U.S. I think he'll help Hayes rejuvenate the T&F program.

MacBruin, I appreciate your update and analysis of new assistant coach Newman. It sounds like a positive addition. Any idea if Hayes has decided which ACs she hopes to retain and which have moved on from AA's staff?

He was hired last year to coach the cross country and distance runners. None of Avery Anderson's other assistanct T&F coaches are listed on the official UCLA Athletics website, so I expect Hayes to add a few more newcomers. JH can handle the hurdlers, but she'll need sprint and throws specialists to round out her staff.
