Final tally from Paris* - 14 UCLA athletes going home with medals. The medal count could have gone higher, but the favored women's water polo team (with 3 Bruins) was upset in both the semifinal and bronze medal matches; and defending Olympic champion Canada and team captain Jessie Fleming were upset in the quarterfinal. Also, softball (with 4 Bruins on the national team) was not on the Olympic program this year, but will be added back for LA28.
Great to see Jrue Holiday win his 2nd gold medal to match the 2 gold medals in women's soccer won by his wife Lauren.
UCLA won 15 medals in Tokyo, which also included 4 Bruins winning silver medals for softball and 3 Bruin gold medalists in women's water polo.
Yes, UCLA is counting the two medals from Rai Benjamin (who started at UCLA but transferred to Southern Cal), and the gold from Mallory Swanson (Pugh) who enrolled at UCLA for a quarter and played in the spring scrimmages before turning pro.
*And UCLA is also counting the floor exercise bronze medal from gymnast Jordan Chiles, which was stripped by the IOC on a procedural technicality. The US delegation is appealing, but if the IOC ruling stands, UCLA's medal count will drop down to 13.
But, they're also not counting the contributions from UCLA coaches, including UCLA diving coach Tom Daley who won a silver medal as a competitor for Britain.
