The other thread was getting close to the end, so I started a new one. Here's the AP story on Karch Kiraly being named as the head coach of the US men's volleyball national team.
https://www.msn.com/en-us/sports/other/volleyball-great-karch-kiraly-is-moving-from-us-womens-team-to-coach-us-men-at-2028-olympics/ar-AA1sS8aZ
Speraw has been the CEO of USA Volleyball for less than a month and this is his first significant action. He also has oversight over the women's national team and the beach national teams. Will be interesting now to see who takes over for Karch with the women's national team.
It also begs the question on whether Kiraly would have been a candidate for the UCLA job, given that Speraw was doing double duty with the US men's national team (as both as an assistant and head coach) the entire time that he was the HC for UCLA. Another question would be whether newly hired UCLA HC John Hawks is now a candidate for an assistant coaching position with the men's national team. Hawks is the head coach of US U21 national team.
I thought that Kiraly would want to stay with the women's national team through LA28. He had just guided the US women's national team to the silver medal and has had the program in a good spot. I don't think that Kiraly has ever coached men's indoor volleyball. But, he is a living legend in the sport and was voted as FIVA's Player Of The Century.
LA28 is now the bookend for Kiraly's storied career. He coming back to LA with the men's national team and will coach in the Olympics 44 years after winning gold in LA as the youngest member of that winning team. |
