MSoccer: UCLA begins NCAA play vs UCSB on Thur 7pm PT
Posted Tue, Nov 19 6:29 am
The Bruin men's soccer team received an at-large berth to the NCAA tournament. They're unseeded, so they have to play a first round match while the seeded teams go straight to the round of 32. UCLA will host UCSB on Thursday at 7pm PT. The winner will play #16 overall seed Stanford on Sunday at 5pm PT (the men's tournament only does overall seeds, not seeds by bracket).

The top team on the Bruins' side of the bracket is #1 overall seed Ohio State. UCLA handed the Buckeyes their only defeat of the season when they met last month. The Bruins would have to travel to Columbus if they advance to the Round of 16.

That women's loss was completely self-wrought

Early in the half, UCLA gave up an own goal due to a bad assumption and lack of situational awareness by a defender, kicking a bouncing ball back toward the goal as the keeper was coming forward to field it. Minutes later, just a defensive lapse allowing a Hokie to get behind them on a long pass for an easy goal. UCLA keeper was not amused by her defense in front of her, I can tell you that.

UCLA's goal was a thing of beauty, and they really dominated play on the whole from there onward, coming a hair away from an equalizer at least once that springs to mind. They really have no one to blame but themselves for that unfortunate and deflating loss.

The confusion on D was baffling. They allowed only 8 goals all year. Hokies played harder and smarter.
