Bruins Hold Their Own at Big Indiana Track Meet
Posted Mon, Jan 27 11:06 am
The UCLA track and field team turned in some impressive performances at the Crossroads of America Invitational in Indianapolis on Jan. 24th and 25th. Among the many colleges represented on the new, banked, 200-meter indoor track at the Fall Creek Pavilion were Indiana, Michigan, Michigan State, Ohio State, Louisville, Cincinnati, and Rutgers. Joanna Hayes did not send her distance runners to this meet, and keep in mind that the running events were on a short track, so the times will be slower than they would be on a full-sized 400m track. I'm going to list the Bruins who finished eighth or better, and the numbers in parentheses indicate the size of the field of competitors in the events I've included. I want to tip my cap particularly to Camryn O'Bannon for carrying his family banner high in the long jump and to the 4x400m relay teams that both finished second against tough competition.

T&F: UW Invitational will be shown on B1G+

I recall that you'd asked a while back about the TV coverage for track and field. Just did a quick check and saw that the upcoming UW Invitational and the Husky Classic will stream on B1G+.

The UW Invitational coverage will start at 1pm PT on Friday and 10am PT on Saturday.

UCLA Athletics has been slow with updating TV info on the official site. I don't know if it's because the conference needs to make an official announcement first, or if they still need to work out the details on whether B1G+ or the B1G Network (BTN) will handle the coverage. Either way, the B1G+ site has been much faster with updating the coverage info than the official site.

With men's volleyball, the TV schedule was posted back in December. But, the UCLA Athletics official site wasn't updated until after the B1G Conference officially announced their TV partnership with the MPSF. For men's volleyball, B1G+ is televising the home matches. So, it looks like they are taking a similar approach with T&F. So far, I don't see any TV listings for the outdoor meets.

Keep in mind that anything shown on BTN will not show up on the B1G+ calendar, and won't be available for streaming until the next day. For now, the UW Invitational and Husky Classic are the only T&F events showing up on the B1G+ calendar. And BTN's TV schedule only goes 2 weeks out. So, it's anyone's guess whether the UCLA-Southern Cal dual meet (or any of the other outdoor track events) will be televised.

Also, all events shown on BTN still require a carrier subscription. There's no standalone streaming option for BTN events.

Good TV Info

I recently subscribed to Peacock because some of the UCLA basketball games (men's and women's) land there, and I have access to the B1G network via Spectrum. Now you've got me thinking that I better add B1G+ to my channel lineup. I'll probably attend the dual meet with SC, but I'd like to catch as many T&F meets as possible on TV. I suppose B1G+ costs something like $10/month or $90/year, right?

Thanks for giving me a clearer sense of which streaming services will broadcast Bruin games and meets this year. It sounds like the scheduling is still in flux to some extent.

B1G+ is great for the non-revenue sports

The B1G conference's TV situation is a mess because the events are a scattershot between broadcast networks (CBS, NBC, and Fox), subscription broadcasts (FS1, BTN, CBS SN), and streaming-only (Peacock and B1G+). B1G+ is great if you follow soccer, softball, baseball, hockey, volleyball, or other non-revenue sports. It also picks up some women's basketball. I've yet to subscribe to Peacock, so that's the hole in my sports viewing.

I subscribed to B1G+ when they had the welcome offer of one free year to Bruin fans. Since I follow volleyball, I plan to re-up the subscription when renewal comes up in August. It's $90 for the annual subscription. There are other options available if you only want to follow a particular sport or school. But, anything shown on the broadcast networks will still require a carrier login (B1G+ will stream broadcast events the next day). So, if you want to stream something showing on BTN, you need to use the Fox Sports app. Can't just use the B1G+ app as a one-stop shop.

For men's volleyball, B1G+ has been great -- they stream all of the MPSF home matches (if you want to watch UC Merced take on Menlo College, they got you covered) and will stream all of the home MPSF duals for beach volleyball as well.
