WGym: UCLA moves up to #2 following win over Penn St
Posted Mon, Feb 17 9:05 am
The Bruins have continued to improve their scores and are now consistently scoring in the mid to high-197 range. With scores of 197.950 against Washington last week in Seattle, and 197.650 on Friday against Penn State, UCLA has now moved up to #2 in the rankings.

UCLA has a road meet at Michigan next weekend, and then they will close out B1G competition in the Big Fours four-way meet in Columbus against Ohio State, Nebraska, and Rutgers. The Bruins will close out the regular season against former Pac-12 rivals Stanford and Utah.

The Bruins had been hovering in the mid=197 range for much of the season. Some much needed consistency after the wild scoring fluctuations last season. UCLA was coming off the disappointing loss to Utah last week, but pulled off a stunning show to lap the field in the B1G Championship meet. Michigan State led through the first 3 rotations. But, UCLA scored a program record score of 49.750 on beam, and then had a huge rotation on floor with a 49.800. Both Brooklyn Moors and Jordan Chiles had perfect 10s on floor.

The Bruins' score was the 4th highest in program history. It likely secures a top 8 seed for UCLA, which gives the Bruins home floor for the NCAA regionals. The Bruins won't be one of the favorites to win the natty. But, their score this weekend raises their ceiling to a level where it's certainly a possibility.

I forgot that the NCAA changed the regional format and will have predetermined sites. Apparently UCLA is still ranked #5. So they will likely get paired with #4 Utah in the regional. Salt Lake City is one of the regional sites, so that could be where UCLA winds up. Some familiarity because they just competed there last weekend, but also potential home town scoring. Seatttle, Tuscaloosa, and University Park (Penn State) are the regional sites.

WGym: UCLA is in the SLC Regional

A lot of familiarity in this regional, as the Bruins have already competed against the other seeded teams. UCLA goes in as the #5 seed, with Utah #4, Minnesota #12, and Stanford #13. Denver, Boise State, Southern Utah, BYU, and Utah State are the unseeded teams competing in the SLC Regional.

Obviously, Utah will have a huge home advantage. UCLA will not directly compete against them unless both teams reach the regional final.

UCLA should have no problem placing in the top 2 and advancing out of the prelims against Minnesota, Boise State, and Southern Utah. If the seeded teams reach the regional final, UCLA and Utah will be the clear favorites to advance to nationals.

However, a wild card could be #13 Stanford. The Bruins beat the Cards at Pauley a couple of weeks ago by a comfortable margin. However, Stanford just upset #6 Cal at the ACC Championship with a 197.775 score. That score was higher than UCLA's score in the dual meet at Pauley. So, it would not be a huge shock if Stanford placed in the top 2 and advanced over either UCLA or Utah. But, with the regionals at the Huntsman Center, I doubt that Utah will get locked out. Watch out for the home town scoring with the Bruins.

The regional prelims will take place on Friday, April 4

UCLA will likely get pushed into the early session that starts at 1pm PT. The evening session will begin at 7pm PT, and Utah will likely headline that group. The top 2 from each session will advance to the regional final on Saturday, April 5 at 5pm PT.

No national TV coverage of the regionals. Only streaming through ESPN+.
