A limited cadre of Bruins participated in the Long Beach Opener this past weekend, the first outdoor meet UCLA has entered this season. While many of the Bruins' top athletes were not involved, those that attended posted some good performances. Below are the men and women who distinguished themselves against a collection of mid-level track teams (including UCSB, Long Beach State, CSUN, UCI, Cal Poly Pomona, CSU Bakersfield, Azusa Pacific, CSLA, Concordia U Irvine, and others).
MEN Kris Emig, hammer throw, second, 225-2 Michael Pinckney, hammer throw, fourth, 207-2; discus, first, 189-1 Jake Stafford, discus, fourth, 186-6 Patrick Curulla, 3000m, second, 8:25.81 Everett Capelle, 3000m, fourth, 8:29.07 Hunter O'Brien, pole vault, second, 17-3.75 Derek Smith, shot put, third, 54-3
WOMEN Lyvante Su'emai, hammer throw, third, 200-0; shot put, first, 50-3.25; discus, first, 177-4 Jana van Schalkwyk, javelin, first, 174-5 (#2 in UCLA history) Georgia Jeanneret, 800m, second, 2:12.55 Olivia Foody, 3000m, second, 9:42.10 Annika Salz, 3000m, third, 9:50.59 Carly Corsinita, 3000m, fourth, 9:56.29 (six Bruins finished in the top ten) Ava Kellenberg, triple jump, fourth, 40-4.75 Mackenzie Kirk, triple jump, fifth, 40-3.5
UCLA did not enter any relay teams and brought no sprinters to the meet. This coming weekend, the Bruins will be in Virginia Beach, VA for the 2025 NCAA Indoor Track & Field Championships.
