Getting the top 2 teams to the title series is extremely rare. Looking through past tournament seedings, the last time that the championship game/series featured the two top ranked teams was 2001 when #1 Arizona beat #2 UCLA in the championship game. And since the championship series was introduced in 2005, there have been no #1 vs #2 matchups.
That illustrates just how difficult it is to get to the championship series as one of the favorites. Since the introduction of the Super Regional, the top 8 seeds have all advanced to the WCWS only once. Upsets have become more the norm with the Super Regional round, and the number of repeat WCWS participants from year to year has gone way down as a result. Only half of the WCWS teams from last year made it back this year.

Aaliyah Jordan opens up the Bruin scoring with a solo shot in the 1st inning. Absolutely crucial start on a night when both pitchers have ERAs hovering close to 1.1, and runs will be hard earned.
The problem with the Sooners going with a pitcher-for-rent off the transfer portal from the Pac-12 -- the Bruins have seen Juarez many times before. Juarez has locked the Bruins down before, but the Bruins have batted her around as well. She won't intimidate the Bruins. |

This is starting to look like the pitcher's duel that never was, and the impregnable OU defense is looking quite breached right now. 3 errors in the 3rd inning led to 2 unearned Bruin runs.
Again, NEVER give this Bruin team extra outs. They will make you pay every time. These kinds of mistakes were what cost Arizona. And I said that OU doesn't make those mistakes. Well, they just did. Now, we'll see what Rachel does with a more comfortable cushion.
OU's looking impatient at the plate. |

You know it's that kind of night when Briana breaks out of her protracted slump with a towering shot to give the Bruins a 6-1 lead. I thought the Bruins would have trouble against Lopez. But, the Bruin onslaught has just kept up. OU isn't doing themselves any favors with their impatience at the plate. Rachel has a low low pitch count right now. She'll be fresh and ready to go for a possible clincher tomorrow. |
