Observation re: last night’s baseball game

Granted it is water under the bridge now, but after watching a replay of our 11th inning bizarre bases loaded double play, I think the umpire may have gotten it wrong. After catching the one hopper, the Michigan third baseman stepped on third and then quickly pushed our runner off of third with a forceful tag. He then turned and tagged the runner slowly coming over from second. But when the third baseman first stepped on third base, the runner on second was instantly out on a force play, making third base open for our runner to stay. The move of pushing him off of the base with a forceful tag was arguably illegal, giving our runner the right to be placed back on the base. All the nonsense after that of tagging the runner coming over from second was needless, because he was already out on the force play.

I was confused but you straightened it out. It should've only counted for one out.

Absolutely right on your initial statement, BUT infielders try to get away all the time

Think Kent Hrbeck of the Minn Twins against the Braves many years ago. He literally pushed the runner off first base, got the tag, and was rewarded with an out.

The ump clearly had a great view and SHOULD have seen the shove, but he hesitated and thus no call. For a bit it actually looked like he was about to kill the play, meaning calling a time out and stopping the action. Now that would have thrown gasoline into the fire folks

I went through the same process on the DVR after that play and came up with the same analysis. The third baseman got the force at third when he touched the bag, meaning that Mitchell, the runner already on third, was safe back on the bag. The 3B could have only gotten a double-play by throwing the ball to 2B and get the force out on the runner coming from first. The ump totally botched it by allowing the 3B to push Mitchell off the bag. I think the umpire somehow had already called him out when he was standing on the bag, you can see Mitchell's face full of confusion. The umpriring for the entire series was weak, especially the expanded strike zone that UM was more than happy to benefit from. Even the on-air announcers (Wes Clements especially) commented several times on the strike zone.
