In response to Congratulations Gerrit Cole (8ball)

I knew that Cole has been mowing batters down at a frentic pace over the past few weeks. But, I didn't realize that he was about to move past the 300 K mark. Much harder to do today than in decades past because of how pitchers are managed.
Even more impressive, Cole got to the 300 K plateau on only 198 1/3 innings pitched -- that's over 1.5 strikeouts per inning, or 13.6 K per 9 innings. Only Randy Johnson in 2001 reached the 300 strikeout plateau faster.
Consider that in the 1973 season where Nolan Ryan set the MLB strikeout record with 383, that only worked out to 10.6 K per 9 innings because he pitched 326 innings and 26 complete games. |
