Baseball team is in the Lubbock Regional.

Not a bad draw. First game is against UNC (27-25). The 1 seed is Texas Tech (36-15) who starts against Army (28-23).

Looks like a good draw

The sweep of ASU definitely helped the Bruins in the seedings. Being placed in the same quadrant as overall 8th seed Texas Tech is certainly better than ASU's spot in the quadrant with 2nd seed Texas.

UCLA moved up to #21 in RPI, but got seeded below that

Going out to the Lubbock regional effectively seeds UCLA at #24, which is an improvement over where they were a week ago when the RPI ranked them #30. UCLA (35-18) plays North Carolina (27-25) on Friday at 4pm PT with no TV spot, so it will be available to stream via ESPN3.

Generally, the selection committee followed the RPI with some minor reseeding. But, 16 out of the top 17 teams in the RPI are hosting a regional. Only #2 RPI Fairfield is not hosting a regional. They ended up getting shipped out to the Austin regional, where #2-seed Texas got a favorable seeding (they rank #6 in the RPI) but a tough regional matchup against ASU and potentially with Fairfield.

Three Pac-12 teams are hosting (UCLA, UCSB, and Arizona were the only preseason ranked west coast teams). Arizona got a generous #5 seed, even though they rank #9 in the RPI. But, they won the Pac-12 and are ranked #5 in the coaches poll and #6 in the media poll. Oregon received a #14 seed, with a #16 RPI ranking.

Stanford also got a generous seed at #9, with a #14 RPI ranking. If UCLA wins the Lubbock regional, they would play the winner out of the Stanford regional, which also includes UCI and Nevada -- both teams that the Bruins have already played this season.

All in all, this was a good outcome considering the inconsistency that the team showed all season. If the Bruin pitching holds up, they can beat anybody in the field. But, if it comes down to the bullpens and the Bruins have to come up with clutch hits to pull out a win, look out.

Down 5-4 in the 8th with just 1 out and a runner on 3rd almost any kind of ground ball gets him home to tie it. Bad coaching in that situation IMO. Beat Army.

If Rajcic can shut them down, Cardenas and the top of the order are up in the bottom half of the 9th.

UCLA struggles again on a Friday, lose 5-4 to NC

UCLA is going to have to do it the hard way if they hope to advance. Losing the opener puts them in a hole early. Did HC Savage try to change up the Friday struggles by starting Bergin rather than Pettway?

The regional used to be compressed into 3 days, but the if-necessary game is now on the 4th day. i'm not sure if I agree with this, but one of the posters on the 24/7 board said that starting Bergin could be a tactic to make him available on short rest for platooning duty if UCLA ends up in the if-necessary game. With the opening loss, they would now have to play the if-necessary game to win the regional. Bergin had a good start, but throughout the season Bergin has followed up a brilliant start with an equally horrific one.

Pettway had a decent start last week, but he's the starter least likely to be available on short rest.

Bruins couldn't quite finish today, unfortunately.
