Going out to the Lubbock regional effectively seeds UCLA at #24, which is an improvement over where they were a week ago when the RPI ranked them #30. UCLA (35-18) plays North Carolina (27-25) on Friday at 4pm PT with no TV spot, so it will be available to stream via ESPN3.
Generally, the selection committee followed the RPI with some minor reseeding. But, 16 out of the top 17 teams in the RPI are hosting a regional. Only #2 RPI Fairfield is not hosting a regional. They ended up getting shipped out to the Austin regional, where #2-seed Texas got a favorable seeding (they rank #6 in the RPI) but a tough regional matchup against ASU and potentially with Fairfield.
Three Pac-12 teams are hosting (UCLA, UCSB, and Arizona were the only preseason ranked west coast teams). Arizona got a generous #5 seed, even though they rank #9 in the RPI. But, they won the Pac-12 and are ranked #5 in the coaches poll and #6 in the media poll. Oregon received a #14 seed, with a #16 RPI ranking.
Stanford also got a generous seed at #9, with a #14 RPI ranking. If UCLA wins the Lubbock regional, they would play the winner out of the Stanford regional, which also includes UCI and Nevada -- both teams that the Bruins have already played this season.
All in all, this was a good outcome considering the inconsistency that the team showed all season. If the Bruin pitching holds up, they can beat anybody in the field. But, if it comes down to the bullpens and the Bruins have to come up with clutch hits to pull out a win, look out.
