Had a lead of 6 points midway through the set, but Pepperdine chipped away until they tied it at 23 before the Bruins took the last 2 points to win the set.
UCLA is outhitting and outblocking Pepperdine, but they are losing points at the service line with 5 service errors and 1 ace, while Pepperdine had only 2 service errors with 3 aces. |

Bruin hitting and passing got sloppy in the 2nd set, and Pepperdine was able to maintain a small lead throughout most of the set, winning the 2nd set 25-22. Pepperdine also began committing more service errors, but they hit .391 compared to .222 for the Bruins. UCLA still has a big edge on blocks, while Pepperdine has more digs.
This is the first set that Pepperdine has won against the Bruins all season. |

UCLA dominated the 4th set 25-19 to win the match and advance to Thursday's semifinal match against Long Beach State at 5pm PT. The Bruins outhit the Waves in the 4th set .636 to .292 and built a 5-point lead early in the set thanks to some great blocking. Some untimely service errors kept Pepperdine within striking distance, but the Bruins were able to maintain a multipoint lead after the Waves came within one point early in the set.
Kevin Kobrine led the Bruins with 16 kills, and Speraw used his bench effectively. Ultimately, the Bruins' depth was too much for Pepperdine, as several bench players made big contributions, most notably Sam Burgi who had 6 kills off the bench.
In the other play-in match, defending national champion Hawaii plays North Greenville. The winner of that match will play #2 seed Ball State in the other national semifinal. Hawaii lost twice to Ball State earlier in the season, with 3 of their starters missing. |

UCLA closes out the match with an ace to win in four sets. I'm glad it was posted the game was available to watch so I caught the final set. UCLA took control early in the set and while Pepperdine closed within a point on a couple of occasions, the Bruins never let the Waves come to shore and left them out at sea.
My only question is what's with the one word descriptions after every play? I thought I was watching the old Batman series with words like Boom! Pow! (aging myself with this comparison). On to the semifinals against LB State. Go Bruins! |

Even though the seedings don't reflect it, tonight's matchup is between the two best teams in the tournament. UCLA and Long Beach State have been the most consistent teams throughout the season, and they split their earlier home-and-home series. UCLA coach John Speraw was an assistant for Long Beach State coach Alan Knipe when he was the US men's national team. The two coaches went head-to-head four years ago in the NCAA championship final, the last time Pauley hosted the NCAA tournament.

Hawaii plays Ball State in the other semifinal match tonight. They lost their two earlier matches against Ball State, however Hawaii played those matches on the road and short-handed. In Big West play, Hawaii had an up and down season, and had to win the Big West tournament just to get into the NCAA tournament field. They beat Long Beach State in the Big West final. But, the Big West tournament was at the Stan Sheriff Center, which is a huge home advantage for Hawaii. Even though they are the defending national champion and came into the season as the unanimous preseason #1 pick in the polls, Hawaii deliberately avoided playing the top MPSF teams. |
