Baseball: UCLA vs Auburn; Reg Final 4pm PT ESPN+
Posted Sun, Jun 05 3:25 pm (Edited Sun, Jun 05 3:31 pm)
I'll have to follow this one on live stats, since the game will be streamed only on ESPN+. I'll keep checking the ESPN channels to see if any of them have whiparound coverage.

The lineups are up, and James Hepp will be the starting pitcher for UCLA. This is only his 6th appearance of the season. His last appearance? Hepp started last week's 25-22 slugfest against Oregon State. With his 9.00 ERA, it will be a minor miracle if he makes it beyond 3 innings. But, at this point it's all about the next man up.

Kelly Austin and Alonzo Tredwell are presumably the only healthy pitchers that Savage cannot use tonight. I would also doubt we will see Ethan Flanagan, who threw 81 pitches yesterday. But, everyone else should be available. Playing the Regional Final out of the elimination bracket always puts big time pressure on the bullpen depth, which the Bruins really don't have much of. But, if Bruins can cobble together enough pitching, anything can happen in the if-necessary game, since at that point Auburn could be facing a similar problem with their pitching. Bruins just need to get through tonight.

Looking at 20-40 more minutes per Auburn stream. Apparently there is a lightning watch.

Back to archival audio.

The game's underway, and Auburn's already up 1-0 with nobody out in the top of the 1st. The game began with a HBP, an error, and a RBI single. Runners on the corners with nobody out. James Hepp might get a quick hook here.

UPDATE: Already a pitching change. Hepp loaded the bases. Still nobody out. Colwell is now in the game. He might have been the better option to start, but I think Savage wanted someone else to absorb an inning or two. Hepp couldn't deliver, and the defense didn't help. The Bruins cannot afford to get into a deep hole early, because they don't have the pitching depth to get into a shootout tonight and come back tomorrow for another game.

UPDATE II: Bruins escape the top of the first, down 2-0. Could have been a lot worse, but Colwell got 3 straight outs (first one a sac fly that scored the runner on 3rd). Colwell already threw 32 pitches yesterday (probably the reason he didn't start). He won't be able to go for a long stint tonight.

#1 Tennessee knocked off by ND
Oklahoma advanced over #4 VA Tech

4 of the remaining higher seeds (therefore the hosts) are down 1-0 in the series. The other is tied 1-1 (UT vs E Carolina)
