In response to WSoccer: College Cup UCLA vs Bama 5:30PT ESPNU (Woochifer)

UCLA has dominated play at the midfield in the early going. UCLA has took 9 shots before Reilyn Turner got the 1st Bruin goal on a great pass from Quincy McMahon. Lexi Wright had 3 great looks at the goal in the early part of the match, including a rebound that she would probably want back.
Bama had an apparent goal, but the offside flag went up.
So far, UCLA looks quicker to the ball and they dominated possession early. But, it the Tide seems to have evened things up more, and had better looks at the goal in the latter part of the half. |

Still a lot of time left, but the Bruins are in great position with a 2-0 lead early in the 2nd half. Quincy McMahon had the assist on Turner's goal, and she got the strike now for the 2nd goal. |

Less than 2 minutes after McMahon's goal, Madelyn Desiano got a clean look at the goal and hit it for the Bruins' 3rd goal. The Bruins are breaking the Tide down in the midfield and using their speed for scoring chances. Bama led the nation in scoring differential, and they're supposedly an offensive minded team. But, they've not been able to gain enough possession to get scoring chances in volume. UCLA's getting clean looks at the goal, and they're now converting those chances.
It should be noted that UNC was up 3-0 on Florida State in the other semifinal matchup, and had to hang on for dear life to win a 3-2 decision. |

UCLA flat out dominated the Tide tonight. The Bruins used their speed generate opportunity after opportunity. Once UCLA stretched the lead out to 3-0, they packed in the defense. On those rare occasions that Bama was able to advance the ball beyond the midfield, the Bruin defense made it impossible to get any clean looks close to the goal.
UCLA will now play defending champion North Carolina for the NCAA title on Monday at 3pm PT. This match is the exact reason why I hate this semi-permanent championship site arrangement that the NCAA has with Cary, North Carolina. The College Cup will be here for the next two seasons after this year as well. |
