The worst of all senerios
Posted Sat, Aug 20 9:53 am (Edited Sat, Aug 20 9:54 am)
If the Big 10 adds Oregon, Cal, Stanford and Washington it will have 6 teams on the west coast. In this scenario they could easily create 3 divisions with 6 in the west and two 7 team divisions in the midwest/east. When that happens ESPN will get it's wish with the Big 10 and get "west coast after dark." Most of our games will be played at 7:30pm. But it gets worse. The Big 10 could deem that the winners of the best two divisions play for the conference championship. If Ohio State and Michigan were in different divisions this could leave the west coast division out in the cold just like the Pac 12 has been left out.

I sure hope not. Personally, I would take only UW and UO. Blend the 4 in.

Some thoughts

B1G is not taking Cal. They offer very little to the conference. Same goes for UDub, imho.

Why would they want to leave the 2nd largest TV market as an aside? Plus, $c and UCLA now get to vote, as full members.

B1G took me he LA schools because of the media market.

People focus too much on the optics of a half filled Rose Bowl, but forget that UCLA’s “half filled attendance” is still about the same as
Autzen sold out, even on a bad year.

When UCLA has been competitive, attendance far exceeds the, even the capacity, of Oregon, Utah, and UDub.

UCLA’s attendance is bad right now, but it’s still in the 50k range for average.

A couple years ago UCLA ranked 27th in attendance

Until 2014 or 2015 UCLA had the best attendance in the Pac-12.

Over the last 10 year, UW has ranked on average in the top 25 in attendance, several of those years UCLA didn’t make the list of top 30, and the years that UCLA beat UW in attendance, it wasn’t by much.

Not likely though

They could join the Big Ten but Cal, Stanford, Washington, Oregon would have to take significant revenue cut longterm, possibly even permanently for Oregon due to their mid major market (very small market). They would be second class members in the Big Ten. I’m uncertain they would accept that. They would earn more than they would in the Pac-12 but they would be at a competing disadvantage.

Not in to this doomsday scenario stuff

First, all of those PAC 12 schools you mention would have to get in the conference. Why would the Big 10 want to split the big enchilada deal they just got with more schools right now or even in the next few years?

When that time comes I will give you a holla cnet.

that those additional 4 teams will come into the Big 10 as partners with a less than equal stake. Kinda like Maryland and Rutgers did. UCLA and USC are coming in as full partners and will be getting much more than Maryland and Rutgers.

In any event the four teams mentioned above will be easy pickins if the Big 12 nabs 4 Pac 10 schools. That would only leave 6 left in the Pac. They'll be desperate to move on and their going rate will be low. Additionally the Big 10 will be looking for west coast teams to mitigate the travel times for the athletic teams.

ESPN will not get its wish

Because ESPN will not be part of the new B1G deal. From all reports, it's Fox, CBS, NBC and Peacock with the broadcasting rights. NBC looks to get the "late" game, but that would begin at 7:30 Eastern.

We know that the deal has been struck with Fox, NBC and CBS. That doesn't mean that the Big 10 can't strike a deal with ESPN separately that doesn't cover the 3 time slots that the other three networks have taken. That means west coast after dark can be a deal with ESPN to take the west coast teams in the 7:30 time slot.

I think we'll have to wait, though. The Big 10 doesn't want to be known as the Pac-12 killer so they're waiting for the Big 12 to make their move. If the Big 12 takes 2, or 4, teams from the Pac-12 then the conference is dead and then the Big 10 can move on Oregon, Washington, Cal and Stanford.

Latest rumor is that Notre Dame is no longer a factor and will stay independent.

Very small chance of that

Of course, we don't know the specifics of the deal, but it's not likely that Fox, Comcast and Viacom would leave a window open for Disney to crawl back in. It seems that Fox brought the other two in specifically to exclude ESPN. But who knows? Dumber things have happened....
