Didn't take long, NIL in high school
Posted Tue, Aug 23 12:13 pm
Article in todays LA times about St. John Bosco to give $400 to players who participate as "influencers" on social media.
So much for amateur sports. I wonder how much you'll be getting paid to play at Mater Dei, they won't let themselves be outdone by Bosco.

What's so great about "amateur" sports?

I really don't see the problem with anyone getting paid for anything they're good at................especially if other entities are profiting off of their labor.

Even the NFL has salary caps

and limitations to prevent the league from being dominated by the richest teams.

I am fully supportive of players profiting just as the schools and leagues profit, but there needs to be controls or schools like UCLA will be unlikely to ever compete.

High schools absolutely profit from a strong athletic program. It helps a school build it's brand. It makes a school more attractive to potential students. It helps a school sell more jerseys and tickets to games. Strong athletic programs bring more support to a school. Winning programs attract better players. Winning schools profit from a stronger, more engaged alumni base. I could go on and on but I've already proven my point.

Your honor, I rest my case.

but the vast majority of high schools aren't "building brands" or otherwise profiting off of student athletes.

What's great about it is watching and following athletes

that want to play for the love of the sport. Isn't that the way all sports started. Isn't that the way people became fans. Isn't that the way sports became popular and why people wanted to participate.

So if you're getting paid you don't love the sport?

I've heard that "love of the sport" nonsense for years................you think players who get paid love the sport any less than those who don't?? They train just as hard. They sacrifice their bodies just as much.

You are talking about bringing pro values to high school. I guess you prefer to just throw money at everything for the cost of winning. If you don't get the difference, too bad for you. I guess the next step is to start paying better Pop Warner and Little League players.

Your stuck in thinking from the 1930's ("love of the sport" crap)..........sorry but those days are over. I believe in capitalism and if someone is willing to pay you for something you're good at...........especially if THEY'RE making money off you and you're sacrificing your body and health................you should get paid.

Why does age or where you go to school matter? Let me answer that for you...........it doesn't!!!

Your honor, I rest my case.............mic drop.

Can’t drop your own mic

There needs to be competitive balance or the whole thing is no longer compelling entertainment and it all falls apart. NFL is the most followed sport in this country and is owned by a bunch of strong capitalist but they understand that if there wasn’t a salary cap they would either go broke or no longer compete. I think most people are ok with compensating athletes but fearful that the end result will be the end of college football for 95% of us

Technically you are the only one that can drop your mic, but you can’t declare yourself the winner. We will let the Judge and jury decide. Lol.
