EXTREME HEAT AND EARLY KICKOFF FOR 1ST HOME GAME
Posted Tue, Aug 30 5:07 pm
Hi Bruin Fans,
I am a long time Bruins football fan and season ticket holder in my mid-seventies. I am looking forward the start of the 2022 season, because I think it will be a winning season with 10 or more victories and possibly the Pac12 title! However, I am dreading the weather conditions for the first home game at the Rose Bowl. It is predicted that the temperature at the 11:30 a.m. kickoff will be 102 degrees and could reach 108 degrees by the end of the game. The UV level will be extremely high and the entire stadium will be in full sun throughout the game!

Coach Kelly has been training the team in early practice sessions in 90 degee heat and plans to substitute a lot to keep fresh players on the field. They will have misting water fans and plenty of Gatorade on the sidelines.

I have been a loyal Bruin fan for at least 50 years and a Rose Bowl attendee since the mid-1980's. I haven't miss a Bruin home game in over a decade, but I am seriously considering staying home for this season opening game, because of the oppressive heat and UV level and listening to it on the radio, instead!

I never thought I would prefer a 7:30pm kickoff that gets me home early Sunday morning, but that would have been a blessing for this Sept. 3, 2022 game, even though the low will still be 81 degrees in the wee hours! I am curious to know what my fellow Bruins football fans feel about this situation.
Go Bruins, - R

Lots of good advice has been suggested if you decide to attend. Treat yourself right and stay as comfortable as possible.

If you have any conditions that would be exacerbated by the heat, you might want to play it safe. Given the conditions, it's possible that the number of people who may need medical assistance could outweigh the number of emergency personnel onhand.

But, take that with a grain of salt. My #1 rule for vacations is not to die on vacation

There is one solution to be there and not in the heat.

The Terry Donahue Pavilion.
I am 80 years old and have had Club seats with several friends for many years. It has an elevator going to the level, a buffet (that starts two hours before kickoff), hotel style bathrooms, and seats with a roof but open on three sides for a breezeway. If it gets really hot you can stay in the lounge and watch the game through the picture windows. There are plenty of TV monitors with the game at about 10 second delay so you can always see a replay.
With the multi-year contract and an increase limited to the inflation index, I paid a little over $1200 for the season. I don't know what it would be for a new contract, probably $1500 or so. It includes parking in Lot 5B. The buffet includes hot and cold drinks but not alcohol, (which they sell at about hotel prices) and it is open through the game.
Unfortunately my friends have opted out on the renewal, and I am not going to the game by myself.
One thing. It is run by the Rose Bowl and not UCLA, so you have to deal with them directly.

And I missed part of the game because my wife almost passed out from the heat of a early September game. I am 72 and I understand your frustration. Being my age it is also good to be close to a bathroom. Getting old ain’t for p——s.

In 1993 we played a great 11-0 Nebraska team in 100’ heat

at the Rose Bowl. The attendance was only 50,222 at 12:30pm kick off.
We had one of our great teams that year losing to NU by one point 14-13.
Nobody is going to show up to see an unranked Bowling Green game …LOL
I’m too old to take the heat .

Packed Rose Bowl, hotter than hell, people passing out in the stands. Good win though.
