UCLA game 1 reflections
Posted Sat, Sep 03 9:14 pm
Just wanted to share my thoughts to the various discussions on the forum after UCLA defeats Bowling Green 45-20 in their home opener.

1. Offense looked solid for the first game, notably the running game. 269 yards rushing, 626 yards of total offense is impressive. Only bit of concern was the amount of pressure Bowling Green was able to put on DTR several times during the game. Film room will show where improvement is needed and I imagine it was partially due to the number of players used on the offensive line during the game.
2. Defense looked much better than last year. Even with the quality of the opponent, holding a college team to 162 yards of total offense is excellent (and 64 of those yards happened on the Falcons only scoring drive). When was the last time UCLA held any opponent to 37 yards rushing? It was good to see the UCLA rush put pressure on Bowling Green without having to resort to continual blitzing.
3. Special teams need work. Punt blocked for a TD, punt dropped for a turnover deep in your own territory, and two missed FGs. Film work to figure out how to fix the first mistake. For the second, perhaps look at other options for PRs other than risking Bobo. Not sure what they can do to fix the FG problem. Barr-Mira needs to step up his game or the Bruins may need to give the other kickers on the roster another chance to win the job.
4. Attendance was under 30,000. Expect the LA Times to harp on this item rather than the win (probably will neglect to mention students are not in class yet though doubt that would have doubled the attendance). They will note SC had 60,000 in similar conditions. It had much to do with the new toy (Riley) in the cabinet replacing the old one - we'll see if the early season hype and excitement can be sustained over the season.

My thoughts on your thoughts

1. A football game is like a 12-round boxing match. Some fighters are gonna come out hard those first 3 rounds. They're going to apply pressure and throw some big shots and try to land some heavy blows. And a great fighter will withstand that barrage. They'll avoid getting knocked out. And their superior skill and conditioning ends up with them winning the fight.

If the Ucla/BG *was* a heavyweight fight, it would have been stopped mid-way through. BG was completely punched out. It was dead on its feet. And Ucla just kept landing blow after blow. BG would feebly paw at Ucla, but they did no damage.

Losing the metaphor for a minute...EVERYBODY in cfb wants a killer pass rush from the front four. Ucla wants one. sc wants one. Etc.

And teams prioritize pass rushers as recruits, and pass rushing techniques during practice.

So it's not surprising that BG, after 9 or 10 months of off-season work, was able to put some pressure on dtr early. However, they weren't able to sustain it over 4 quarters/12 rounds.

Ucla may not have the best pass blocking ol in America. But it doesn't have to. It just has to worry about being better at pass blocking than 12 teams are at pass rushing. And Ucla decisively won that battle this week. Ucla completed ~35 passes for over 350 yds... that's a win. On to the next one.

Btw, Ucla didn't use many ol. The five starters got the vast majority of the snaps. Siale Taupaki played some at RT (and looked really good, imo), but that wasn't until the second half. Tyler Manoa got done snaps at RT, too, at the end of the game. And Sam Marrazzo played some at center.

Raiqwon O'Neal had a great first game as a Bruin.

2. Yep, D looked good. One game of 12. 11 to go. There will be better o's. If our d stops them more than they stop us, we're going to win.

3. ST...whattya gonna do? Yes, the blocked punt was bad. #11 (Murphy bro) blocked the wrong guy. Personal protecters ALWAYS look inside out. A guy starting closer to the ball is more dangerous than a guy starting farther away from the ball. #11 picked the guy farther away to block. He didn't make that mistake on the next punt.

But the missed FGs....pfff. it's a crapshoot. The kid hits the shot or he doesn't. NBM only made 2/3s of his fg's last year. That's not a great success rate. If Ucla could do better, it would. But yeah, there's a definite risk that Ucla loses a game this year because of a missed fg or two in a tight game.

4. Haters gonna hate

Liked Blaylock & Churchwell bringing hard legal hits...

The cringe-worthy clip by Latu on the pick was not as egregious as I thought after seeing replays...the player he ran into was pushed into his path...but it had to be called...

Gaines & Marrazzo again showed their value...

Kirkwood has that next level type field presence...

Our 3 initial squad -

DTM - Was that pick just to show us what he doesn't do anymore?
NBM - (Mira) As I stated prior, they should find a punter...multi-tasking might not be working
TMA - (Titus) Hadn't heard too much when he arrived but seems will be getting lots of PT
CBS - (Choe Strother) Looked productive the times he was out there...and just a soph....
SHK - (Kaufusi) Is he still with the team? Don't remember seeing him out there.

Props to some of the space eaters on the DL - Magna (aptly named), Smith III, Toia, & Sykes, came in to spell starters and not much dropoff....
