Two separate articles slobbering all over the Trogans

on the front page of ESPN for beating handily Sagarin's #149th ranked team in the country last year. Say what you will about Bowling Green, but last year they beat a top 30 team, despite having an identical record to Rice.

Bowling Green's D Played Tough

They stopped the run pretty well. I'm not going to pin that all on the Bruins O-line needing experience together.

Say what? It so happens we had the rushing yardage

good enough for 18th in BCS, 11th among Big Five conferences. Bear in mind most of the latter also played against patsies, even as we did. (Bama was 16th).
Last season, an average of 269 yards per game would have been good enough for third in BCS, behind only the service academies Army (natch) and Air Force (ironically). The 6.0 yards per rush would have led the BCS.
I won't say we had a great day running, as the stats were skewed by DTR's runs. But his runs aside, we still had 182 yards with a respectable 4.8 average. I won't say they stopped the run pretty well either.

What does SC have to slobber over except football?

It's not like they are winning Nobel prizes over there.

UCLA had more impressive stats against a better opponent (notwithstanding the score) but the media is obsessed with USC. Rice is one of the worst football schools in the country.

Keep in mind 21 USC points were off of 3 long Pick-6’s

One was 93 yards. The Owls should nickname their QB “Wild Rice”.

Actually two of them went off the hands of open receivers

and tipped up in the air conveniently for SUC, as well as another pick. They were all on the receivers, and it isn't as though SUC defenders make any great play.
The other Pic-6 I don't know what happened, the pass went into an area with nothing but Trojans. The QB's arm may have been hit.
The first one was critical. If the receiver had caught it, it would have been a TD. 14 point switch.

The U Tube synopsis is here. You can see for yourself.

2012 - Rice vs. UCLA

Didn’t Hundley and company hang 49 points at Rice that year?…boy, Rice is such football powerhouse. As I recall, Mora and company showed class and didn’t run up the score.

They’ll come down to earth when they actually play a real program. Media is enamored with SUC right now.

SC is a big brand— like it or not- college football gets bigger numbers when they are doing well— same with us when we are doing well in hoops. It makes sense.

The trojies played very well. I did some scouting. They have playmakers and experienced players.

Caleb Williams will be a top 2 pick in the draft next year, likely number 1 unless Ewers passes him, which would surprise me. He’s very impressive.

As much as you are the best defender of our shield this board has, I don’t think you give Riley enough credit. Do I care? No, because I can’t stand Riley. But he has turned that roster around with 40 new players and they looked poised to maybe put up 9/10 wins if not better which would be quite a difference from the Clay Helton era.

As I’ve repeatedly said, they are going to get their asses beat at the Rose Bowl— it will be all the more sweet this year if they are playing great ball and we destroy them.

That trogan D is ready for prime time. Rice may be the worst team in CFB and their first drive ate SC up.

Three of their first four drives ate SC up.

First drive, 74 yard ending in TD.
Second drive, three and out.
Third drive, 63 yard drive to the USC 12, where they threw a 93 yard pic-six. That was a 14 point switch.
Fourth drive, 75 yard ending in TD.
The score at the half was 31-14. It could have been 24-21, against Rice. That one play turned the whole half around.

But Rice was bad. They came out and threw two more pic-sixes in a row. Then they threw another pick. At that point the SC offense hasn't even been on the field in the second half, and the score was 45 to 14. And Rice just gave up and died.
