Attendance during Mora’s term
Posted Mon, Feb 05 7:43 pm
2012 - 68,400
2013 - 70,200
2014 - 76,600
2015 - 66,800
2016 - 67,500
2017 - 56,000

Average 67,583

Impressive.

“ And the lowest? That came in 2019, when the Bruins averaged 43,848 while going 4-8. It might seem hard to believe, but it wasn’t so long ago that UCLA set a school attendance record under coach Jim Mora, drawing an average of 76,650 in 2014.” Ben Bolch

Part of the problem is scheduling

Remember Michigan backed out and we started scheduling lower division for the first time. Ends up that people want to see high level competition, who would have thought?

The other is that the student attendance seems to have fallen off a cliff.

Did he mention a little change that happened in 2017? Not one but TWO big-league football franchises came to L.A. at the same time. The Indianapolis Indians of minor league baseball do pretty well by MiBB attendance standards (about 8k per game). If suddenly two big-league franchises come to that vicinity, does anyone think the Indians' attendance would not be impacted? It would crater.

If you win it, they will come - simple

Funny how all the excuses come out with barely any mention of what our record has been under Kelly.

Create excitement, bring in elite talent that people want to see, and they will come. Kelly is a bore, and now he wants to jump ship - but no other ships are there to pick him up.

Just look at Colorado. Give people some hope, win some games, and they will come.

Competition from the NFL

I don't have time to dig them out, but the average home attendance at the Rose Bowl during the years that the NFL was absent from the LA market was about 10k higher than for the years when the LA market had NFL teams. That's not coincidental.

LA's a large market, but it also has a glut of sports and entertainment product competing for attention. 2 NFL, 2 MLB, 2 NBA, 2 NHL, 3 MLS teams are all clamoring for the same pot of disposable income as the 2 D-1 NCAA sports programs. It's a bigger pot, but a lot more hands are grabbing for it.
