Talent level
Posted Sun, Sep 29 7:40 pm
Does anyone happen to know if Arizona has been recruiting at a higher level than UCLA in the last few years? They look so impressive on both sides of the ball against Utah. If not, it’s got to be coaching. I remember not that long ago that Arizona was the pac12 doormat. What a turnaround. The wildcats play with fire and a swagger! Is there hope for us, I’m wondering?

Our talent level is not good

And yes... Fisch outrecruited Kelly by a mile.

I was told this weekend we were bringing in an extra 5 million bucks next year to the football program by one of the people in charge. The mega donors are not discouraged apparently.

We are going to buy a QB, some lineman, and some edge rushers as the top priorities.

Appparently we have a donor who is giving an extra Million because he's so pissed about the QB play (no it's not me).

We will be fine at the skill positions if kids don't leave. I hope the young QB's get some time and experience this year, even if they are not ready. Can't get much worse than these three point halves.

Must not be the guy who funded Dante Moore

That’s the donor who is pissed. LOL

NIL needs to be spent on transfers and retaining top players. Do not spend NIL on HS kids. Too hard to predict if they are going to be good.

I think we’ve entered a new era, where the rarity will be guys like Miller Moss who stick around for awhile and develop. If you mismanage a kid he’ll be gone.

I’ve said before and I’ll say it again… we should have either sat Dante Moore last year or stuck with him through the turmoil for the Stanford game. He was playing badly, but once we sat him he was gone. It’s a damn shame he beat out Garbers for the job. Garbers was in his 4th year and shouldn’t have choked the way he did.

Moore had 11 TDs and 9 ints last year, numbers we would kill for now. And a few of those ints were in the cal game T the end iirc.

I agree with you….. I would try to get a 4th or 5th year guy next year as our Qb. If Martin beats him out in his 4th year, fine. But we can’t have another year like this. Maybe Davis or Gordon or Hasselback will step up, but we can’t count on that.

Because matching other offers alone won’t be enough to draw top talent.
UCLA lacks the football culture and tradition of the top Power 4 schools

If our talent level is 29th in the country…

They must not be including linemen. We have an offensive line that can’t pass block or protect the quarterback. That covers pretty much every aspect of their job. And our defensive line and edge rushers can barely record any hurries, let alone a sack or two. Also our run defense is sporadic, at best. So who gets us up to #29?

Ok, but everyone points at Bama having the most stars as responsible for their success.

Performance on the field isn't how they measure talent

Talent level is a general inaccurate measurement based on the star rating system out of high school. If the offensive line isn't performing well it could be because the coaching is suspect or it may be that they don't have highly rated (by the star system)athletes on the lines.

You can’t coach strength, speed, and instinct. Most of our linemen seem to be sub par in all three.
