In response to Self imposed sanctions for Michigan football (Alta Loma Bruin)

This isn't the first time in recent years that Michigan has self-sanctioned for NCAA violations. I recall that their penalties were tougher the last time around, and the NCAA accepted the penalties. That was also a case where Michigan disclosed the violations first. That all happened in the aftermath of the Reggie Bush sanctions against Southern Cal, back when schools were concerned that the NCAA had grown a spine and was more willing to go big on the penalties. The slap on the wrist for Miami not long thereafter proved otherwise.
At the time that the Southern Cal sanctions were passed down, I said that Southern Cal's arrogance was their downfall. All they had to do was admit wrongdoing and self-impose some sanctions that looked half-way tough, and the NCAA would have accepted them. Instead, they decided to do the whole "we are sc" act and dare the NCAA to get tough. Sucked for them that the NCAA called their bluff.
Suspending a coach for a couple of games for spying? doesn't sound like much to me. But, in light of how lax the rules and oversight have become, that might be the most anyone should expect to see. |
